Valve Cover Gasket job

Ordering parts for this project/job now per this thread

Camelback wants $23 each for the valve cover gaskets (11213-62020) but I found Genuine Toyota gaskets on Amazon for less than $18 ea and free shipping

Camelback is cheaper on the washer seals (90210-05007) spark gaskets/seals (11193-70010) and FIPG (00295-00103) - which is cheaper than the retail price of The Real Stuff from Permatex

I already did my PCV valve and grommet a while back, so I'm skipping that.

EDIT: I forgot to order Cam Plugs! Amazon has them for $11+ each but thanks to 4Runner4Leon I got them at https://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-2-Ge...72.m2749.l2649 for under $14 including shipping from AZ (2 days away)

Questions

1) Do I really need four new semicircular plugs (11183-62010) or can I clean and reuse mine?

2) Intake gaskets, clean and reuse or replace (replace seems reasonable after 255K miles, but what y'all do? A 2-piece Felpro set is $18 on Amazon

Clean up and reuse the half moons. It's a waste of money to replace them.

Don't reuse the plenum gaskets. Some do, but do you really want to risk having to tear things apart again trying to save a few bucks on gaskets?

like [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] said, just clean and reuse the 1/2 moons. I chipped one of mine but even with the fipg it's sealed nice and tight. I ordered non OEM Felpro washer w/ seals. I originally bought the whole OEM kit off ebay then found that the washer seals weren't included and after 260k the rubber was hard as a rock on ours. I did order new cam plugs as the rubber coating was beyond hard.

The Felpro intake gaskets aren't as good as the OEM's which you can find on fleabay for $14. I destroyed a 2 week old set when I was chasing down a p0171 code I did last month and had the plenum off-definitely not as robust as OEM.

Also buy some wire harness flex covering 1.5-2 in diameter, rated at 500+ to replace the factory harness that will undoubtly fall apart on the drivers side when removing the valve cover-its super brittle. I tried to alumi-tape it but it just crumbled under the tape. Buy the (I think you bought) hose clamp tool I sent you part #-which is fast becoming my favorite tool. 10mm, 14mm, 12mm flex sockets help too.

This post and the constant burning rubber smell keeps reminding me that I need to fix my leaky gaskets too....

One of these days I'll get off my butt and get this done.

I'm gonna use OEM valve cover gaskets, I was only considering felpro for the intake manifolds, but if the cost for Genuine Toyota is similar then I will always opt to use them - or if there is a good reason why to use them

The half moons on my truck cracked when I removed them. A couple of pieces of the little ridges broke off, so I had no choice but to replace. I had planned to replace anyway, so had the parts on hand. I got mine from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Toyota-11183-62010-Engine-Camshaft-Plug/dp/B00KTIENXI
 
We did the whole kit on ours with all OEM parts. Was a job I only wanted to do once. We also replaced the half moons though I have no idea once we removed them. Ours came out clean and could have been reused but since we had already ordered a set, we just used themm

I did...used the "recommended" kit from aircabinman. Kept seeing that kit come up over and over in my searches here. When it arrived, I didn't think it was OEM as most all of it wasn't specifically branded "Toyota." After some research, it appeared to be the same stuff with the actual manufacturer name on it however. All seemed to be great quality.

Im in your situation as well. I just need to buy the parts and get it done
 
I just did this on my 2002 with 183k and while it was a time consuming job it wasn't overly difficult.

For what its worth I went with a Beck/Arnley valve cover gasket kit and cam seals which look to be rebranded Toyota parts. Everything has the same markings as the OEM parts that were removed.

For plenum gaskets I went OEM and cleaned/reused the half moons, sealed with FIPG, and so far no issues.
 
I just did mine, took about 6 hours total (including half moons and cam plugs).

Mostly uneventful, just followed Tim's excellent video.

The harness cover completely disintegrated before I even touched it.

The only thing I did differently from Tim's video was I pulled out the driver side valve cover not diagonally, like Tim did, but straight forward towards the front of the truck. I found that the harness had much more flexibility doing it that way.

 
Orders were placed with both Amazon and Camelback, I should have all parts today, or before this weekend at the latest (hopefully)
