valve cover gasket?

Just purchased a 99 limited w\136k on it. I noticed some oil around the valve gasket. I figured i would try tightening them first before i replace them. The bolts were loose enough to turn by had so i m thinking that might have been the problem. After i tightened them up i drove around and checked under the hood and noticed smoke coming from the rear of the motor on the drivers side. Is this a pretty typical place where these start leaking? Or could it be coming from below the valve cover around the exhaust? I cleaned it up a bit and will check to see if more oil accumulates. Also how tight should i tighten up the bolts around the valve covers

the smoke is probably residual from the valve cover leak. You just need to tighten them up probably 1/2-3/4 turn from hand tight just enough to squash the rubber washer. be careful as the covers can crack with too much pressure.

thanks rdgt4r. I was thinking something similar i will have to take it out for a drive and see for sure. Any chance it could be leaking oil from around the exhaust area on the motor there was a little oil back in there. Have you ever seen that?

Mine is having the exact same problem and oil is leaking on the exhaust I havent tried to tighten down my bolts yet to see if that might fix my $500 problem. Also DIVNWND what size socket did you use to tighten your valve cover?

i had the same problem and iend up reaplce the valve cover gaskets myself pretty cheap if you do it your self. and there is no way you can tighten all the valve cover gasket bolts because the upper and middle intake manifolds blocks four of the bolts so you are gonna have to take off the intake manifold. took me 8 hours to do it. PS this is a great time to replace you sparkplugs. good luck my friend

10mm is the size. the area it is leaking seems like it is from the back of the motor by the firewall. there are 2 screws that go into the motor horizontally not vertical. Near the plastic cap on the back of the motor any clues on what that could be or is that all pertain to the valve cover gasket

BTW, you'll need to remove the intake manifold and should replace that gasket as well....
 
hi,

i have a problem with this valve cover leak. the smoke is coming from the back of the engine (near the firewall), so i removed the valve head cover, and discovered that the gasket is ok, but there does seem to be some debris inside the valve head. there was also alot of debris and buildup on the outside of the valve head as well. the head bolts were really loose.

there is also no coolant found inside the radiator as well...

please help, i do not know what the problem is, maybe the bolts were too loose so all the oil and coolant leaked out of the valve head?

I'm currently in the middle of this job right now. My bolts were loose also, but with 230k on the truck I though it'd be money well spent to go ahead and change out the gaskets while I had the intake plenums off.

I'm open to any questions you may have. I hit a snag with a broken bolt that I'm dealing with, so it's turned into an extensive project for me haha.
