Valve Cover Leaks

Hey...need advice on my valve covers. I noticed oil residue leaking from both covers. I have tightened the bolts...not too tight, but did the ones I could reach, they still seem to be leaking....is there anything I can do short of the major tear apart...?? Thanks!!!!:thanks:

Yeah you can snug those bolts down, and that usually helps it. But, most people end up just replacing them. If you're thinking about putting some stop leak or something in, I wouldn't do that. Its just oil, and hey --- its good for rust prevention!

I did my passenger side gasket in about an hour or so. I haven't done the drivers side yet...

In short, no. However if you obtain a service manual (toyota) it is a fairly simple job. You can also subscribe to alldata DIY online for pretty cheap and they have the same info as the factory service manual. Im sure there a write up on this subject somewhere. Over time the rubber seal in the valve cover gets hard and quits sealing. Tighteneing the bolts will do nothing unfortunately. Remove the intake and throw new gaskets in. Oh and forget about any oil additives that claim to refreshen seals. Theyre not a good idea. Good luck and have fun with it.

If you replace the valve cover gaskets you should be good to go.

Mine were leaking really bad, and now they don't leak at all. Good luck! Report back!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really appreciate your help. I am going to replace the gaskets...it will be a good adventure for me...I'll do the plugs and such too while I'm in there!
