Valve tap after rebuild

I have an odd valve tapping noise coming from the right bank of my V6.

I was careful to be sure and replace the little spacers into the right spot.

I even went back with a feeler gauge and checked their clearances- they were all within spec.

Any idea?

also, I have a lean code

I see you got it to start and wondered why it wouldn't before. It sounds responsive, even healthy. Is there enough oil getting up there? Did you do a valve job while it was apart?

no valve job, just new HG then re-assembled.

I spoke with a guy that said the cam bearing caps might be overtightened.

then I got to thinking the cause of the crappy idle is the timing might be off 1 tooth. But that might make up for the lean code, but not the tapping.
 
I just spoke with the toyota dealership and they said it would be 75$ to diagnose the problem!!!

cheap in my book- im about to button it up and take it to them.

=( although ill feel bad that I didnt get the chance to fix it myself.

Why wouldn't it start before?
 
DONE!!!

found out the problem,

In my hanes manual it says to install a service bolt in the secondary cam gear. I didnt do that because it showed them removing the actual gear. So I just pulled the cam out and re-installed it later.


well, I found out that there are 2 seperate gears that are spring loaded and your to install a 10mm bolt to keep them aligned....

thats where the tapping is coming from.



and the 5vz-fe is not an interference engine

So that fixed the rough idle and the tapping? I think I have figured out the Toyota system. All engines with a timing chain are interference engines. All engines with a timing belt are non interference engines.

lol, that makes sense. chain-usually won't break, belts-break

I also didn't use the 10 MM bolt. Since mine has a rough idle and tapping also what exactly did you do to solve the problem. Remove the valve covers and re-align the gears?


Mine only has a tapping at idle speed, but it does have a rough idle.
