I bought my 4runner a few months ago and it's always had a slight tick, but lately its gotten extremely loud. I knew from the start it was the valves, so instead of paying the dealership $650 to do it for me I decided to give it a shot. I got everything off and measured the clearance between my lobes and the shims and some were in tolerance, but none were over. The ones that were out of tolerance were too tight, which confuses me because why would it be ticking if it's too tight
? Aren't they supposed to tick if the clearance is too loose? However I read that if the clearance is out of tolerance by even 2 or 3 thousandths of an inch that it's considered quite a bit, and most of mine are too tight by 5 or 6 thousandths (one of my exhaust valves is sitting at .006 and the tolerance is .011-.015). I know that's probably pretty bad but I still can't figure out why it would be ticking being too tight? Any advice or info would be much appreciated!
