So with my days I have more important things to do with my free time than get greasy like every work day or wait for hours for just a few bucks, I'm happy with $30 oil changes. Right down across the street at free service their special is $18.

At least the 4rnr has fresh oil.

The only thing I will point out is that you're gonna get what you pay for, for the most part. The cheaper the cost, the more likely the facility is interested in quantity and not quality; it's been sort of a time tested thing when it comes to "quick lube/quick service" in the automotive industry.

My Toyota dealer charged me 75 bucks for synthetic.

The last one charged 45 bucks... but apparently they didn't use synthetic, so I went 10k with 5k oil.

When I had my Trooper I used to take it to a Valvoline shop near us for oil changes. It was cheap, and especially easy, because it was next door to the pizza joint. So we'd drop off the Trooper, go have pizza, and the Trooper would be ready by the time we were done.

At first they did pretty good work -- but over time things went downhill. I'm not sure but I think they changed management or something. The original employees were replaced with guys who looked pretty seedy and seemed to be much less competent.

Then there came a time when they failed to refill the oil after draining it. I discovered this when my engine started overheating on the freeway. That should have been the last time, but I gave them another chance and eventually they screwed up again -- failed to replace the air filter after removing the old one.

Tried Pep Boys after that, wasn't happy there either. So now I don't waste money trying to save a buck by going to cheap-o, quickie shops. I found a quality repair shop that does reliable work and treats me right. They're not cheap but they're worth it.

I used to take my vehicles to quick lube places because I thought it wasn't worth my time to change my own fluids. That is until a quick lube place put about 11 quarts of oil into my 2007 Corvette Z06 (it holds 8). They also broke the valvecover fill block-off in the process (you're supposed to fill it via the dry-sump remote oil tank only).

From then on I've done all my own fluids. I already do all other work on my vehicles myself so it's not a big deal.

These days if you want something done right you have to do it yourself in my experience.

I saw this and thought it was informative... I do my own but anyone going to a shop should watch this first.

When I did or do go to a shop I always use a paint marker to mark the original parts/ show alignment of bolts etc... that way I can easily tell if a part was replaced, or removed during the repair... That goes for the oil filter and the oil drain plug too...

Its been a long time since I went a quick-lube place, but I recall back before I was mechanically savvy and started doing my own that, other than resisting the inevitable upsell (how many PCV valves did my car have, I just replaced one 3000 miles ago!) I never had a bad experience with them. That being said, my daughter uses them almost exclusively and somewhere along the line one of them left the drain plug on her PT Cruiser as round as a donut. Hopefully it was the last one before I started working on her car, otherwise I shudder to think how any of them were draining the oil when they got up underneath. Hell I ended up using a large ez-out and replaced it, and let me tell you trying to drill a pilot hole, hammer home an ez-out and torque it out with only front wheel ramps was not EZ. Nevertheless, that has so far been the worst experience I've ever had with them, and I don't fault anyone who doesn't have the mechanical skill or time for going to these places, its just a shame that there can't be a reasonable level of confidence to expect quality workmanship.
