Vegas Shooting

Interestingly it’s getting close to 24 hours since a lone gunman killed 58 people and wounded hundreds more but this forum is silent on the topic. There are 2665 posts on the firearms thread but none on the killings by a 64 year old retired millionaire real estate investor with no criminal background or history. He’s a Nevada resident with no religious or political affiliations or relationship to extremists or ideologies. His target was Country Music fans that he plotted to kill in great numbers as he successfully did while holed up in a hotel with a number of powerful guns.

What gives folks? Nothing to say? Don’t give a damn? I’m confused, please enlighten me why this isn’t worth a mention in our “off topic” area that includes topics on just about everything. I wonder if there would be comments if the shooter was black? Or Muslim? Or Latino? Do we need someone yelling Alhau Akubar for it to be considered terrorism? Why isn’t this domestic terrorism?

The deadliest massacre in American history is an 'act of pure evil' and doesn’t get a comment. WTF.

Well, inevitably, this will turn into political and gun control arguments...and thus, frowned upon here.

Hotels on the strip have been sold out for weeks...so, he planned this well in advance. Weapons likely have been illegally converted with scopes and tripod. Door to hotel room barricaded. This was meticulously planned down to the details.

This seems weird for someone who just "snapped." Girlfriend conveniently overseas with money sent to someone in the Philippines weeks in advance.

He is a converted Muslim with the help of his Indonesia (likely Muslim) girlfriend from what i understand. ISIS claim responsibility. This was a terror attack by an Muslim fanatic with allegiance to ISIS.

Homegrown terror if you will. This is the biggest problem for FBI/NSA.

There isn't really much else to discuss IMO. USA needs to handle this like any other terror attack on our soil. This is a reminder of our enemy. No releasing of doves or useless hashtags or more ignorant celebs talking about open borders. We need to strike back at ISIS.

I don’t see a terrorist attack as political or necessarily leading to gun control arguments but I will make a point of not straying in those directions.

Please reference a source for your Muslim comments, I haven’t seen that anywhere before your comment.

The FBI has stated there is 0 link to ISIS, it's a false claim by the ISIS bastards to take advantage of a terrible situation.

But, tell us @Thai, you have sources stronger than the FBI I assume? Maybe you can link us to a Fox news article about the ISIS link.

@CXS, when it's a crazy white man who is one of the NRA members with a bunch of guns who commits a mass murder, there's nothing to post about -- he's just a one-off troubled soul with mental issues. Only if it's a Muslim or person of color, we need to media obsess about it 24/7 for weeks on end and discuss how Trump needs to push immigration reform.

too many questions and to many limited details, there isn't much to discuss at this point, just prayers towards everyone who lost loved ones or those fighting in the hospital.

I don't need Fox news to put together the pieces. I may be wrong. But thinking through what this terrorist has in his possession (tons of weapons, ammo, explosives) and the way he planned this out, this was premeditated months in advance. Sure, his family may not know...but remember, he was NOT closed to his family. This is early in investigation, but personally there is no doubt in my mind that he is a terrorist with ISIS ties.

And his Indonesian girlfriend is not innocent...just my suspicion.

ISIS is losing the big war...they are calling all their foreign "soldiers" to attack...see recent Canada terrorist attack.

Here is a quote from an article: (I agree with Mr. Smith analysis) Stephen Paddock: Isis gives Las Vegas gunman jihadi name in new claim amid widespread scepticism over terror links | The Independent

"In analysis passed to a member of the US House of Representatives’ Homeland Security Committee, terrorism analyst Michael S Smith said he could not rule out the claim being wrong, but added: “If Isis’ claims of responsibility for the attack in Las Vegas are false, this would be the first deliberate false claim for an attack in the West issued by the group.

“In most instances where Isis has claimed attacks in the West, the responsible terrorists have either explicitly attributed their attacks to the group…or investigators have uncovered some link, ranging from correspondence between responsible terrorists and parties in the ‘caliphate’ to online activities reflecting the consumption of propaganda.”

Mr Smith said that while a false claim would bolster Isis’ attempts to terrorise the US, the potential damage to its credibility could be deemed too high as it suffers huge territorial losses in Iraq and Syria.

He noted that the multiple claims and chatter in prominent unofficial outlets and terror channels indicated a “high level of confidence” among Isis members linked to the group’s external operations division.

The Las Vegas shooting came days after Isis released a 46-minute speech purporting to be from Baghdadi, who urged followers to “intensify one attack after another against the infidels”.

You guys are welcome to come to your own conclusion. God bless the victims and their families. But we need to act strongly against the group behind this (who i think is ISIS). I am getting too damn tired of reading about hashtags after every damn terrorist attacks or releasing of doves or celebs calling for more love and open borders. This is getting predictable and downright stupid IMHO.

Holy hipocrisy and wild speculation on the NRA BS bro!

I have some thoughts on this shooting but will refrain until more info is known. There just not enough info out there to pin down a motive.

Most will wildly speculate based on their political affiliation, agenda or bias. It's just the nature of people.

No one posted about the Muslim Tennessee church shooter, and that didn't get you or CXS into a tizzy now did it?

The moderators have made it clear they don't want politics on this forum. That's why people refrain from posting about these incidents- Because they always become political in nature.

The OP was drenched in anti gun slant. I'm sure he will deny it, but it's obvious the point he is making with references to the Gun threads and no one posting this. He himself could have posted it whenever he pleased, to try and point fingers at others for not doing so and masking it in a vague sucker punch at firearm enthusiasts is already politicizing it.

I will say it's disgusting that politicians and individuals are politicizing this event at all, be it calls for Gun control or anti white male BS or anti Muslim BS.

More info will come out on this guy, you don't plan something like this without leaving behind some info as to motive unless it was a pure mental break or mix of prescribed meds that fed the madness.

I for one would love the MSM to report pure facts and quit speculating and reporting opinions. And stop reporting on firearms/terminology unless they have ANY education and understanding of them- they sound like complete bafoons.

maybe some people are just tired of hearing the same tragic stories and choose not to feed the fire by continuing on about some unrelated tangent that accomplishes nothing. Its a vehicle forum, not facebook. Every major headline doesn't automatically get its own thread.
& BTW it is/was only the deadliest in *modern* US history (ie post 1920s..)
if you want to critique other peoples use of vocabulary or lack thereof.

Just fyi you ventured into the "offtopic" threads in case yer wonderen, thanks for coming and downplaying the horror of this attack though

I think because he is a white NRA member this will get quite a bit more coverage than the 'run of the mill' attacks we see getting pushed to the side as soon as possible by an unfortunate amount of news outlets.

Either way I wish those people peace and cannot imagine being in a situation like that

I didn't post anything but I do care about what happened a great deal. Still kind of in shock over what happened honestly. I had friends there (they are all ok). There were a few people that our friends or co-workers knew that were either wounded or killed. I'm not really a fan of new country music but my wife is and we had actually discussed going to this event months ago. We go to Vegas at least a couple times a year for concerts, trade shows (SEMA is our favorite), or just to get away for a while.

That being said, the older I get, the more I dislike going to places like Vegas. It's crowded and I get uneasy in situations like that. Maybe I'm paranoid but I'm always thinking of an exit strategy especially when in a city like Vegas. It's crossed my mind more than a few times that someone could do exactly what happened Sunday night in Vegas or any other city with thousands of people walking or standing around.

I do agree that this attack was planned well in advance. I'm not entirely convinced ISIS was involved but that could be a logical explanation. Whatever the case, this guy was absolutely out to kill and hurt people. Gun laws wouldn't have mattered to him. He would've found a way to obtain them or used other methods to kill/hurt people like using bombs, knives, bats, etc.. Evil is evil and will always find a way to hurt.

My heart goes out to Las Vegas, the victims and their families and friends.

I may be wrong here but from the videos i have seen of the shootings, i have a hard time believing the guns used were true full auto. To me the rate of fire seems too slow for a true fully automatic gun. Any opinions on this?

rate or fire is fast enough but it varies to much, my guess is bump slide stock. it is really expensive and difficult to get full auto lower

edit unconfirmed pics of shooter and some guns on live leaks that look authentic to me including an Ar with slidestock

that is 2 mentions of the NRA in this thread, but the first I am hearing it overall. has it been released he was a member?

based on the other facts about him, im guessing he actually was not a member...

Can we mourn the dead, pray for their families, and pray for a speedy and full recovery for the survivors.

We don't have enough facts beyond that.

Thankfully, he didn't decide to fly one of his planes full of explosives into the concert. As bad as it was, it could have been worse.

Absolutely this topic is fine here - as long as you talk about the topic and don't bring politics and religion into it. Those two never end well.

I do agree that there is probably a better forum out there for topics like this, instead of a vehicle forum. But it's fine here, just keep it respectful.

I have not read that except in the post I quoted - I hope not the nra does a lot of good for this country in my opinion. Not looking to debate just clear up I do not know if he was a member

I’m guessing this is in response to my suggestion to the mods that it be deleted. Looking over “off-topic” I see this type of topic is usually avoided thus my suggestion to remove it. Naturally I’ll accept the mods decision but suspect it will deteriorate and go south.

Regardless, I’ve decided to step out of this before it does turn bad.

Mea culpa.

I don't understand why this stuff happens in the US so regularly. The US isn't the only country that has crazy people or allows gun ownsherip (regardless of attitude toward it). I mean, is it really looser gun laws? Or is it just the cultural attitude toward conflict resolution? Even in a country like Canada, you can own handguns and assault rifles (5 rounds max per mag of course). Having said that, you can obviously make these M4/AR-15 mags hold higher limits (illegal but can be done) and cause carnage if you wish. So what I don't understand is if the extra aggravation of being able to owns these guns in Canada really what keeps us generally less likely to be mowed down by a whacko or terrorist or whoever? Same for many other developed countries.

I don't know... I'm honestly not convinced that if the US had Canada's gun laws if it would make a difference. On the flip side, perhaps those kind of gun laws would reduce the glorification and enthusiasm of/toward gun ownership. Though Canada has a very high rate of gun ownership, people generally don't think guns are cool or a means or self-defense, and are generally surprised if you announce that you own one.

Wishing anyone affected by this tragedy all the best. Not sure if closure will ever be brought to the victims. It will be interesting to see what new information arises.
