Vegas Shooting

While I would agree that sales is one of their most important goals, I would argue that it is their only job. I would like to think that journalistic integrity is up there with some of them. Otherwise, what would the difference be between The National Enquirer and The NY Times? Even though many are trying to push that there is no difference.

But do you think that is them being proactive or reactive? Meaning, is it more a result of the current state of information? I would say it is.

Making a story that sells ads is their only job as a company. There might be a few idealistic journalists out there who are doing it for the right reason though. I know it's a pessimistic view but I fear I'm right.

My point is media has gradually been shaping messages for years and the real truth gets lost in the shuffle. IMO, the media doesn't care about anything. They don't care who won, who shot who, who was born, who died or anything else. They only care about making sure they get their ad dollars.

Case in point media outlets reported that Tom Petty died 6 or 7 hours before he actually did because they wanted to be the ones to break the story. They don’t care about the truth, just the ratings.

I’ve learned a lot. Particularly that men in the United States REALLY struggle in this realm, and have very little social or emotional support. This affects men of every race and socioeconomic background.

This part. Definitely true. I just watched a documentary that went in depth on the issue of lack of support within society for men.

The Red Pill (2016) - IMDb

Personally I thought it was interesting, worth watching and asks important questions.

As for the author
Charlie Hoehn is an author, marketing strategist, speaker, and play enthusiast. After graduating from Colorado State University in 2008, he studied under and worked with a number of bestselling authors, such as Ramit Sethi, Seth Godin, and Tucker Max. He worked alongside Tim Ferriss during the production and launch of The 4-Hour Body ..."

His website first commendation is by Tucker Max, the guy who who wrote those dueschebag college bro books.

Anyways, the author has no actual history as a mental health professional and went to school for marketing major. He doesn't know anything more than us here in the T4R thread. But that doesn't mean he is wrong.

kids will grow up into isolated adults who don’t know how to play, or seek out their friends when they are lonely. They have no emotional support.
Sounds right, plausible.

This is all opinion though. We can never get in the mind of the kiler. Don't fall into trap of believing Social Science is like hard science, no offense to any Social Science majors here. The truth is most of what you read, even by "professionals" is speculation because the killer is dead and took his secrets with him.

The Red Pill (2016)

Will definitely check it out.

I don't buy into his theory. Back in my father's and grandfather's day, men didn't need confidants nor play. They also didn't need to kill a bunch of people.
They were just men.

I would say that it's a little closed-minded to make that correlation. There are so many factory that differentiate those eras. But I also don't completely disagree with that statement either.

I just stumbled upon this 5+ minute cellphone posted by Dan Bilzerian on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/danbilzerianofficial/videos/2076795839224340/
It shows some of what's going on and it also shows 5 minutes of what the gunfire makeup was like. It's seems apparent that the break in fire is due to mag capacity and a) not a "machine gun" b) doesn't sound like multiple shooters c) there is a pretty long break between gun fire- doesn't seem like Delta Force is mowing people down d) would smoke really have been an issue? For every second of gunfire, there is at least 1 second of silence.

Beaumont67, you of anyone on here should watch the video:

I might be different but I was bought up to be the guy who provided those things for my family, not to need those things myself. Everyone is different though.

I think his perspective conveniently aligns with what he is trying to sell. It is completely unrelated to the event in Las Vegas because we don't know anything about the dude... Unless you're Alex Jones, who apparently knows there were multiple shooters and it was a gun deal gone bad.

Ferriss, Gladwell, Godin, they're all very successful bro-storytellers and marketers who appeal to a section of the public who have disposable income and first-world problems. They're always busy constructing a narrative where they're trying to get you to buy their next book. They're very good at it. Welcome to 2017....

This is why I don't watch or listen to the "news". A while back I watched a local station do a remote broadcast. They were using my neighbors house as an example for their story on how long the power was out after a storm. The problem was the house had power. After the broadcast, I went over and spoke with the crew. Yes, they knew the house had electricity. It was hard to keep the basement light and the blinking meter out of the shot. Then the reporter said something that topped it all off;" creative journalism". Then they laughed like it was all a big joke.

But maybe it's hard to truly provide unless you yourself possess?

If you enjoy reading, check out a book called Iron John written by Robert Bly.

But it's more of a broad idea to the mass murderer psyche. And while very true that it may align with what he is trying to sell, that doesn't mean what he is saying holds no water.

And for the record, I didn't post that article because I agree with it. But that it had some different ideas not commonly addressed when dealing with these incidents.

As a broader idea I think the concept has merit, especially for teenagers and young adults. But the dude was a baby boomer. Baby boomers were all told to go outside to play and to be back for supper (at least here in the midwest). Computers weren't readily available. The internet didn't exist for the general public. And you had to rely on your friends to feel alienated, rather than social media. Thus my original comment....

Again, my opinion.
The media's ONLY job (and most people are way to altruistic or are wearing rose colored glasses) is to sell advertising. That's it. And, it's a very competitive world trying to get ad dollars. If they don't sell ad space, they don't get paid. It really is that simple.

This is true, but I also think that people on top has realized that media can form or sway public opinion. And it's very powerful thing, media don't even have to lie, they can just select what facts to report and what don't. People's opinion about everything is based on information they have and if you decide what to tell people you can make a huge difference. So I think that media owners also try to form public opinion, either to promote their ideology or earn more money by directing people lifestyles. I don't know what they have in mind - they would never tell, but there are alot of examples, for instance last President campaign showed very clear that media tries steer public opinion very heavily.

They don't do it for anything except to attract viewers which attract ad dollars.

I agree the Media existed for revenue.......until powerful folks realized it was also a tool for advocating political points of view and Social Engineering. Credibility left the station with Cronkite! I don't know if their is a relation or motive to be had in the fact the Shooter had ''stalked'' other concert sites before this event, or if they merely presented the ''fish in a barrel'' scenario He needed for maximum damage and notoriety. I hope We can get some explanation...not that it will lessen the damage done but maybe be a benefit in the future or to the Families left to pick up the pieces.
