Vehicle capacity weight reduced with locking rear differential?

On page 462 of the owner's manual, it indicates that the load capacity of the 4Runner is reduced by 330 lbs. if it has a locking rear differential (1165 vs. 835 lbs.). I'm trying to figure out why this is so. Does the locking mechanism add 330 lbs. to the vehicle weight? Is the body-to-frame clearance reduced with a locker? Does the locker somehow compromise the strength of the drive train? Would the reduced capacity only come into play if the differential is locked?

I'd appreciate any knowledge someone may have in this regard...thanks.

It's probably something to do with the components of the locking mechanism weakening overall rear axle strength. Unless you're a hardcore rock rider or put it under a heavy bind while locked I wouldn't worry about it. It hasn't been a concern for me and I'm hauling an extra constant 800+ lbs in armor and gear. This has been asked and answered several times in this sub-forum over the past several years. A search may find you more information.

That old link isn't really conclusive.

835 lbs as a load capacity doesn't make sense either, unless they've got an additional load capacity listed for the trunk.

Because 4 ~200 lb adults plus a baby and baby seat could easily surpass 835 lbs... and I can't imagine not being able to carry a single pound in the trunk.

Heck, yesterday I had probably 800 lbs of passengers and 150 lbs in cargo and the truck didn't even seem taxes in the least. The suspension wasn't even sagging.....

Basically the loads are listed separately for up front and trunk.

So for my 2018 TRD off road its 835 lbs of people and stuff up front and 970 lbs in my non-3rd-row trunk, which is a lot better.

Meh. Half the people on here with pig rigs have been overloading the 4Runner for years.

I wouldn't sweat it.

I removed that yellow sticker almost immediately when i got my TE. I thought it had something o do with KDSS but either way capacity limit makes no difference on how I load or drive my 4R.
