Very Interesting Oil Filter study.

I found this link on the Jeep Liberty Forums ( my wifes ride) and I found it to be a good read. I was shocked on how crappy and cheap some filters are. I didnt see any toyota OEM filters in the study, but it does shed some light on the vast array of aftermarket filters. Looks like Mobil 1 filters are the best. Im having doubts on using the OEM toyota filters.

Fear you must not my friend, Toyota Filters are great and cheaper than Mobil. Mine stealer parts department has cutaway Toyota filter display next to Fram. What a difference, Fram should be ashamed of their product.
 
Not for nothing but, what does this test show? NOTHING but size and material used. Where does it show how well it filters?

This is the most important data, which is missing!
Hydrostatic Burst Pressure Since I cannot test this myself, I have removed this data.
SAE J806 Filtration Efficiency Since I cannot test this myself, I have removed this data.
SAE J1858 Filtration Efficiency Since I cannot test this myself, I have removed this data.

Many years ago Consumer Reports tested filters and the test showed that some of the cheaply made filters actually filtered better then most of the more expensive ones. The Fram filter actually was the best. Back then the Mobil 1 filter didn't exist.

Bottom line is, you can't rate a filter by how it is made or the materials.

I agree , the tester is leaving out some important data. I was mostly concerned about what I read about the mopar filters since I maintain my wifes 05 Liberty. I would like to trust the OEM filters but it sounds like the mopar filters are manufactured by the lowest bidder. Much like our dunlop situation on the 4R.

Koz, your right, I guess you cant judge a filter by its apperance or materials. A side by side oil flow and filter analysis is the only way to see who is the best.

KOZ, so you would be purchasing the BMK11? It seems to me that would be the best (leaving the stock filter in its location). Now... I am going to get underneath the rig and take a couple digital pictures of the "engine oil cooler" that contains two ports (each have bolt plugs). Perhaps the in and out ports can be used to accomodate the BMK11. Anyways, after I post the picture, I will ask you (and the other members) for some answers.

I purchased the BMK-13, with the SDF-15 full-flow filter and the BE-90 by-pass filter. One of the reasons I went with the dual remote system was to make it easier the change the filter. The OEM filter location is ridiculous.

The adapter/cooler has coolant routed/circulating through it, it works well.

Would there be (in addition to the coolant running through the "engine oil cooler" block) any advantage to adding an actual engine oil cooler (similar in size and location to the transmission oil cooler)? Or, perhaps I should say... have you done this already?

Where are you going to run the oil return, headcover, oil cap, or drain plug.

I don't like the idea of punching or drilling a hole (via a self taping anything) in the oil pan. Have you explored the idea of adding and a dual adapter using the existing oil drain plug port.

Oil analysis has shown that the 4Runner engines are very easy on the oil so there is no need to run an additional oil cooler. Many engines don't have the oil cooler like on the 4Runner.

There is an adapter installed where the OEM filter is screwed on. There two line/hoses attached to the adapter (supply & return), so there is no drilling, and the OEM drain is still used.

If you look at this link, it shows the install. I can tell you this system and parts are TOP quality. For instance the mounting block (the block that the filters are screwed onto) is machined billet alum and anodized.

I hate to even mention this because of the non-believers but this system filters almost all contaminants, including water, out of the oil every 5 min. With the use of the right oil, changing the full-flow filter every 12.5K miles, changing the by-pass filter every 25K and oil analysis every 25K miles, you can use the same oil for approx 100K miles.

Thanks for posting this. It confirms another report last year that said the only Fram that was worth buying was the Tuff Guard - a good buy at Wallyworld at around $4.

So what's that much better with the Toyota filter?

That's not my understanding, because don't the additives wear out long before the oil itself? It's the additives, I'm told, that are what really contributes most to modern engine longevity.
