very loud rattling noise from the rear of thr tranny

very loud rattling noise from the front of the drive shaft

Hi guys, I have a 2000 ltd, and its been great so far, I now have a terrible rattling noise and it seems to be coming from the rear of the tranny, almost where the tranny meets the long drive shaft, but it is only at a low speed, as soon as I reach about 20 mph., the sound seems to go away, I have checked to make sure all mounts are tight, and it seems as though every thing is solid on the outside, has anyone had these rattling problems before?, if you have any ideas, I would like to hear them,,,thank you,,,,,Josef,,,

you might wanna take a look at the u-joints and the carrier bearing. you would usually feel the u-joint but not so much the bearing so that could be the case. also check your fluid in the transfer case.

best advice to just grease your drive lines and hope that gets ride of it other wise i'd check your exhaust mounting and cat system for holes and the like, remember the back of the 4runner is dead space so the sound resonates under neath the truck a fair bit, if your 100% sure it's coming from the tranmission and not the rear drive shaft i'd look at your trans mounts and see if they look good.

wow , had quite a surprise today, went to take off the drive shaft, so i could replace the u joints, but when I took it off there was something I havent seen before, at the front of the shaft there are 2 u joints, and in between those are a large ball and knuclkle, this is where my noise is coming from, but how to get to it is beyond me. I went to my local mechanic who is allways very helpful, and he told me he cant even do that job, he sends it out to a specialty shop, whith a special machine to replace the ball and knuckle, he sais its about 3 -400 dollars to do the job, at wich time they replace all the u joints, ball and knuckle, and re balance the shaft, seems okay for all the work they would do, but I wanted to ask if any one here done this themselves, or is this just beyond me,,, I have never seen anything like that before,,,,,,let me know,,,thanks,,,,

That sounds like the driveshaft from a 2wd, no? if so, i've heard it is possible to replace everything yourself, but it's a PITA. Your best bet to save a few bucks is to try and find a used driveshaft or just have it done at the shop.
