Very Poor Gas Mileage

I think there is something wrong with my 4Runner V8 04.
The first tanks were ok, just in the average I think but now I'm getting 4.3 Km/l - 4.6 max, I know you guys use mpg but if one Gallon is 3.8 litres.... this means 10mpg!

I'm driving only in city while in the first tanks I use to mix highway and city and the gas mileage was way better than my Jeep!

First:I'm not driving fast
There is not lot of trafic here!

I'm the only one or maibe the 4Runner is too young? (3000Km now).

Please help me :)

um, i have a 04 as well... i get 14/15 in the city, and i reallllllly have to watch my gas pedal , heavy foot usage... with a bad ass sounding muffler and ait intake, i love the way it sounds... plus, people tell me it sounds like a high performance GM car.... anyway, are you at higher altitude? are you verifing it with your computer?

i don't trust the computer.. i drove 25 miles in my truck after the computer said i had 0 miles left.....

thing is... fill that puppy all the way to the max...(reset your trip ometer) A and B.... like you can see the gas, to make sure it's full... drive around NORMAL.... normal day outside, normal conditions... then when it gets about half a tank, fill it back up, all the way full again, to like the first time you filled it up....

then take the amount of gallons you just NOW filled it up with and divide the amount of gallons, to the very rounded off decimal if ya want... by the number of miles on your tripometer.... that is how you trully come up with your gas mileage.... i don't trust the computer period...

My last 2 fuel fill is (not a lot of KM)

137.2 Km (82Miles) Litres 31.36 (4.37Km/l) (9.94MPG!!!!)
150.8 Km (91 Miles) Litres 35.45 (4.25 Km/l) (9.75 MPG!!!!)

I don't look at the on board computer....
 
something doesn't sound right. even if you drive like a at out of hell in town you shuould still get 12 mpg. 15-16 is avg for town. my 4r when stock got 19-20 wih mix of town an highway and i drive pretty brisk. have them check it out, any check engine lights?

what gas are you using?
 
In Km the trip computer says 420 (250miles)
In the two month was 540 (325)

I fill the tank at Chevron here in Canada.

But in the last month I'm using the car mon to friday only for go to work, shot trip and shopping on the saturday.

You didn't say how north you are, but winter is almost here and some gas will have a winter additive that will cut mileage...

Also, when it's cold, the choke is kicking on when you start up, and will use more gas...

All that being said, my worst tank was 12.92MPG, and I drive with a heavy foot... YMMV...
 
Don't fill up until you are almost at E on the Fuel Gauge. The reason is the tank will be close to empty and your truck will be overall lighter thus you are going to be getting pretty good gas mileage. If you are always filling up at halfway, then you are always carrying around at least half a tank of gas and that will decrease mileage because of weight.

I used to fill up at 1/2 because it made me think I wasn't spending a lot of money at the gas station. Then I compared my calculations to when I was filling up at close to E and I was actually getting better mileage when filling at E. So filling up at 1/2 actually cost more money because I'd have to do it MORE often!!!
 
There is something way wrong with his gas mileage. Whatever tricks one might suggest to help improve mileage are just ignoring the fact that something is very wrong. I get on the low end of what people claim for gas mileage and still I get 14-16 mpg in a mixture of city and highway driving. Pinuz's truck has to have a gas leak or be running extremely rich. I think he should take it back to the dealer.
 
Mine gets ~450-500kms to a full tank of gas (full as it'll go, then ride gas light for a day) in mostly city conditions.

I'm confused tho.....if you fill the tank, reset the trip meter, and drive till gas light, how many kms do you get? If it's getting anything above 400-450kms per tank, it's probably your calculations that are broken, and not the truck.

I fill the thank everytime just for check the gas mileage.

The on board computer is still averaging from the first two months and hesn't accurate.

I live in Vancouver BC, quiete warm in this period .

The first problem in the last month can be the choke since I drive just the time to go to work (few miles) and go back to home.
Doing this with a full tank I can made no more than 360-375 Km ( 220-230 Miles)

For now I'll drive until the tank will be empty and I'll fill her up again and check the mileage.

Ok, try it out. I do basically the same thing with my V8 driving wise, and am coming up to the first fillup.....I'll let you know how many kms I get for comparison, as mine is NOwhere near broken in.
 
I've never had anything as bad as yours but these guys getting 14-16 in town are doing really well if you ask me. 12-13mpg in town is what I've seen fairly consistently over the last 10 months. It was about 1MPG better before I got the exhaust / ECU mod for the rotten egg smell fix. Even out on an open level highway using cruise control, my truck gets only 14-16mpg. This is the computed mileage not the reading from the trip computer which is almost always 2mpg worse.

I use Chevron regular and almost always fill up at the same station and pump. Maybe I should switch back to super for a few months and see if things improve? Unfortunately i just noticed that MSN lists my area to have the most expensive gas in the whole country averaging $2.50/gal for regular.

To put it bluntly, this truck sucks on gas mileage. To some extent I expected this but didn't figure it would really be any worse than 16mpg average -- I was wrong. Still enjoying my 4R though.

A gallon of gas weighs about 6 pounds, so a half tank is only about 70 pounds, which is less than 2% of the weight of an average 4Runner.

How much do you think your fuel economy will improve on that second half tank of fuel? I don't think it is possible to see any kind of significant difference.

BTW, it's a fairly well-known fact that filling up at E is hard on your fuel pump, because it is located inside your fuel tank and is cooled by being submerged in fuel. If you run your tank to E often, you may be shortening the life of your fuel pump. Just something to ponder.....

Really? I'm actually pretty impressed with my mileage, particularily for the type of vehicle this is. Without getting into MPG figures, I'd say my V8 is no more expensive to run than my old 2-door BMW 325i was.

Granted the BM took premium and the 4Runner just gets reg, but on a monthly basis the cost is really close, for the exact same driving. And there's a helluva lot more one can do with the 4R than that little car.....
 
...was just my opinion. Like I said, I expected the gas mileage to be poor, just not this poor. There are heavier full size SUVs out there with gas mileage no worse than I get. In any case, perhaps the new '05 V8 will do a bit better or maybe I'm just unlucky. Who knows. It's still a great truck but IMHO, mileage isn't one of it's strengths.

Carrying around dead weight makes a difference. If you have to repeatedly accelerate that dead weight its going to add up.

Even after filling up at E, there is still over 2 gallons of fuel in the tank. That should be plenty to submerge the fuel pump.

Yeah, I think the tank is supposed to be 23 gallons and even when filling after the low fuel warning light came on I got less than 21 gallons in.
 
The poor mileage may be a result of using litres/US gallons (which gives about 10.8 mpg for 4.6km/litre), as opposed to using litres/imperial gallons, which gives about 13 mpg.

Nope......one of your gallon is 3.785 Litres, I'm basing my conversion on this....
The 4runner loads 86 Litres, so is approx 23 gallons.

Here in Vancouver, BC Canada, the gas price is crazy, in the same day you can see 72c/litre - 90 c/litre, look at this chart!
