Very poor MPG 2013 Limited

Bought a ***new*** 2013 4Runner Limited about a year ago. I have been EXTREMELY disappointed with the fuel economy. I think it was posted as 17/21 or something similar. We have never gotten 17 consistently in the city (usually 15-16 mpg). At 60-70 mph on the highway we can get around 19 mpg.

Just wondering what real world experience others are having with these new boxy, heavy 4 Runners.

Check n 5th gen for similar posts !! Many seem to think winter blend gas . I get 16+ mixed driving with 285s so not much better on 05 either this time of yr ! Shit happens

I pretty much get what the sticker says. But I don't do jackrabbit starts and if I'm commuting I'm more hwy than city.

Winter gas, brand new engine. It will improve in a few months.

So assuming you are averaging 2mpg less than expected, and assuming 50/50 mix of town and hwy driving, you would have expected a range/20 gal fill to go about 380 miles. You went only 340. This means if you drive approx 12,000 miles per year, you filled up 35.29 times instead of your expected 32.89 times. Therefore, assuming $3.50/gal (i know it's less now but for average sake), you had 2.4 extra fills at a total cost of $168 over the course of the year. That is $14 more per month than you expected to pay in fuel. Perspective is key.

I got better than sticker mileage before Mods. While i might tick above the limit on the highway, i drive pretty mild.

I'm getting around 17 MPG in ~60% city driving. No complaints here. If fuel economy was important to me, I would have bought a Prius.

I don't quite understand the complaint here?

The 4th Gens were about 4,300lbs, the 5th Gens range from around 4,400~4,800lbs in cub weight (which seems a bit on the heavy side.)

That gas mileage doesn't sound too bad for a brick hurtling down the floor on winter gas.

Scangauge or Ultragauge...

If you're really interested in pinching pennies you could invest in either a Scangauge II or an Ultragauge. Now obviously those won't, by themselves, increase your MPG but what they will do is give you real-time feedback as to what causes your MPG to go up and what causes it to go down. I run both (SGII on my 4runner and UG on my DD Mazda B2300) and I would estimate that just running the gauges adds 1 - 2 MPG overall because it helps me to "hypermile."

Whether it's "worth it" is a question only you can answer. To me the value is more in knowing the exact range (Distance to Empty) as well as things like the transmission temp (since I frequently pull a trailer) so I don't really count the cost against any perceived MPG gains.

I presume the SGII has the same "X-gauge" capability on the 5th gen as it does on the 4th which is what allows you to see the tranny temp. That's the main reason I run an SG.

Our average over 29,000 miles since Day 1 is at 18.2 mpg. Mixed driving, but a pretty fair amount of highway driving at 75-8o mph, sometimes with a rooftop box or ski rack. Car is a 2013 Limited.
