I replaced the seals on mine yet I only used toyota parts. I'd suggest to stick to toyo parts. Luck and enjoy that Runner. :cowboy:

I wouldnt mind spending some time piecing together a kit of my own with either all koyo or timken bearings and the OEM seals. I just dont have any data on the sizing of the bearings. I'll do some digging into it. A new chain and maybe sprocket depending on how worn they are once I open it up would be key as well.

I'd imagine the synchros or whatever might be in there would be important to change out as well. I'd wager they are probably the most worn out part. Likewise most of the bearings and seals are probably not too sensitive, gear oil is extremely thick and the tolerances probably aren't too tight.

This is why I liked the thought of the kit on rock auto. A lot of people I've seen have had issues finding the needle bearing as well in addition to what you mentioned and it's all in the kit

It wouldn't surprise me if it was a quality kit, worse case give USA standard gear a call and have a phone call with them. I don't see a number on their website but you could probably reach out to a distributor (or rockauto) and ask. Just a quick browse but they do list Koyo bearings (what Toyota uses) for their rear diff.

True that, hey I appreciate it APhelps!

Yeah i'd just make sure to get new synchros somehow. Certainly won't be cheap but I'd imagine it'll work like brand new if you do.

Most manual transmissions they aren't replacing the gears, they are replacing bearings, seals and synchros.

Yeah you have got to have quite a few miles and poor lubrication to actually cause significant wear on hardened gears like that and actually, you may already know this, but the proper process while rebuilding anything gear driven is to just flip the gear around where applicable. The drive side has all the wear and coast or reverse side has essentially none. For the trans rebuild I'm for sure going with a master overhaul. But I didnt have any info on the transfer cases.

I know when my uncle ripped reverse out of his 85 sr5 5 speed. He had his complete transmission rebuilt with all OEM Toyota parts. Now this was in the late 80s. Like 86 or 87. I believe that ran him 3k or 4k then. The reverse was only half mesh and he stripped it off. By doing it that way though he never had an issue with that transmission again.

I plan on giving that rebuild kit a shot, supplement the seals with OEM Toyota stuff and anything else OEM specific. As I think the transfer case is where my whine is coming from.

sounds like quite a project. you could also get a rebuilt one from marlin if that ends up being necessary to fit in your available time. i have a rebuilt transmission from them, and it is really superb work. i wouldn't expect anything less with their other products.

Used transfer cases are abundant in my salty region, even low mileage ones. Not worth the time for me to rebuild. I can get them at $100 a pop and they're easy to swap out.

I feel like myself the case will take longer than the trans from the time I put it on my teardown bench to the time it's done unless it's extremely simple. FSM makes it look like cake. Thankyou for the recommendation about Marlin, I've wondered if their quality is good or not.

I agree with you! I live in Michigan and deer alone take out enough 3rd gens for quick and cheap parts but my personal goal is to rebuild the entire drivetrain this summer. Both riffs, tcase, and trans at the same time so I know that it was a quality job and that everything on the rebuild has the same mileage on it. Then I'll toss around the idea of getting an engine and rebuilding that.
