vibration/growl coming from front end --> help

Hi,

I am new to this site.

My 1990 4Runner has started to vibrate and there is also a growling sound coming from the front end when I get to about 50-55 mph. I can feel the vibration start at around 25-30mph. The 4Runner is only in 2 wheel drive...

I've changed tires but that didn't help. The rear u-joints are a year old! Nothing else done.

I did hear a ticking noise at the front end of the truck and then it started to vibrate when the ticking noise disappeared. I didn't get a chance to investigate. I don't know if there is any correlation with the ticking noise and vibration!!!

Does anyone have any ideas... front axles, front transalxe, wheel bearings.

Any suggestions, help would be greatly appreciated...

TIA... dave

Does your Runner have the ADD (automatic disconnecting differential)?, if so, the front axle shafts turn whenever the vehicle moves.

When CV joints go bad, they usually click, particularly when you turn. It's sounds like your CV joints could be shot.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Yes, it is automatic-locking hub.

The clicking (more like ticking) was even when truck was standing still!!!

Another question... if I can't figure out what the problem is, should I take it to a dealership that "SHOULD" be able to diagnose the problem or an independent garage that might know a little about 4x4.

Well bad CV joints wouldn't click when the vehicle isn't moving.

Possibly the ticking you are hearing when the truck isn't moving, is unrelated to the noise, and vibration you feel when going down the road.

The ticking you hear when the truck is just idling could be excessive valve lash, or it could just be the fuel injecters operating.

The noise and vibration going down the road could be a loose fan clutch.

The best way to diagnose this is to find a mechanic that specializes in driveability issues.

Because all any of us can do on the internet is guess.

Good luck.
