Vibration on startup

Hi guys, I have an 05 v6 with 192,000 mi. Lately at random times when I start up the motor shakes, then stops as the idle levels out. I've had the dreaded P0430 code for about a year, but have just lived with it. Tonight I went out and started it up, and this time the CEL blinked for a few seconds then went steady again. My mileage has been slowly dropping. I don't have a code scanner handy, but does anyone have an educated guess as to what it could be? Taking it to Limbaugh in Birmingham tomorrow to see if they can help me.

Hows your coolant level?

Sounds like another head gasket failure.

Haven't lost any coolant, and I haven't had any overheating.

Have a compression test and a leak down test done anyway if possible. Shops and dealers tend to misdiagnose and recommend you replace spark plugs, wires, etc, trying to chase it when it's the head gasket. It's turning out to be pretty common unfortunately for the early V6s. Hopefully that's not your case, but please report back what you find out. Good luck!

Hopefully that's not the case, but if it is a bad head gasket I might not have a choice but to trade it in. I do love my truck and its brought me through hell and back, but I can't justify the 2-3k they'll want when I can put that down on a new Camry or Prious. I'll report back as soon as I know something.

Flashing cel is usually a multiple misfire occurring right at that moment. Shaking and bad fuel economy can be old spark plugs and bad coil packs. I have had bad head gaskets on my cars before. Once they go they go fast and hot. Like steam everywhere!

I just heard from the dealer and they said the no 4 coil was failing and that the plugs were worn down. The plugs in there aren't even a year old, but I told them to go ahead and change them out. $350. The service manager told me the same thing you just said re: a bad head gasket.

Allright, a couple of days after getting it back with new plugs and the #4 coil replaced, the symptoms returned twofold. I went out and started it up, engine was shaking like Miley Cyrus, CEL flashing and white smoke coming from the muffler. Took it back to Limbaugh, and they told me it "could" be the fuel injector, and that my water pump was leaking. I asked the service guys could it be the head gasket, and their most senior mechanic said it was a very good possibility. I decided I had had enough, and traded it for a 2012 Camry.

I was sad to have to trade it, but like I said earlier, it came out cheaper in the end to just replace the car. It could be worse, I could have gotten a CRV!
