Vibration starts at 80kph (50 mph)

Hi, I am experiencing a vibration that did not exist prior to the installation of the new lift (3" rear / 2.5" front), ome springs, procomp shocks and struts and new tires.

Here is how the story unfolds:

March - install new shocks, struts, springs and new Geolander AT 275/70 r16 balanced on stock alloy rims...........major vibration begins at 80 kmh(50mph)

April - installed Spidertrax 1.25" wheel adapters (all 4 wheels), purchased new BFG 285/75 and balanced on stock rims (by BFG dealer)......vibration still exists but not near as bad. Passengers can also feel the vibration.

May - purchased and installed set of 93-98 LC alloy wheels, BFG dealer takes off Spidertrax adapters and balances/installs BFG 285/75 r16 tires......vibration still exists. Exactly same vibration as in April.

Question: If the vibration is mechanical in origin, what areas of the drive train would need adjustment?

I will go back to the BFG dealer and get the tires rebalanced to make sure that its not the tires.

Any comments or experiences with this type of problem?

I have a Stock 4runner with no suspensions, yet but however, I do get the vibrations sometimes and I've always assumed it was because of my quick turns into lanes on the interstate. Meaning if I'm traveling 75, I'd make a fast switch into another lane so I assumed the wheel was making the rest of the car vibrate. D: I'd like for this to be fixed as well.

I would inspect the u-joints after the wheel balance is done. Because it started with the suspension lift, I think the u-joints are the most likely cause. Others on here really stress the importance of proper balancing by having someone balance using a Haweka adapter. Read this. Please post up your results as this issue comes up frequently, especially with suspension mods. Also, I would suggest getting an alignment which should be done after any suspension work. Thanks and I read the article, now I am a little confused. I understood the 4runner wheels to be hub centric and not lug centric. The spidertrax adapter that I had on last month were specifically for hub centric vehicles like the 4runner.

But the article does make good sense that it is wise to have the wheels balanced properly and the u-joints inspected.

I just called the BFG dealer here in Vancouver where I had the tires installed and he said that he had not heard of the Haweka device, but they do have a wheel adapter that they will use to re-balance my wheels next week when I bring the truck in on Tuesday. (he did say that it takes a little extra time to set this up so me thinks that he did not use this device on my tires earlier).

Again have not seen you mention any wheel alignment.. This is critical after any suspension work especially a lift. My mechanic adjusted my coils up to tall and due to the additional stress on the CV joints i got the same vibration. Once i got the front adjusted down to acceptable lift and the wheels ALIGNED a second time the vibration went away.

Sorry, yes North Shore off road did a wheel alignment after the lift installation.

Thanks very much for the info. If the wheel re-balancing does not solve the problem then looks like the next step will be either the cv or the u-joints.

my brother had the same problem on his 99, rattles at 80 kph, seems like this was a typical issue with our trucks and it was the rack and pinion. have you resolved yours?

I was just gonna say that...check the steering rack bushings and the inner tie rods...two very common problems that can eff up your day
