vibration when i let off gas ?

hey guys, coming home a little while ago i was doing about 60mph, and when i let off of the gas i noticed some vibration in the 4r, and was also making a noise of some kind, the noise wasnt that loud, just loud enough for me to hear, what could be going on here? 99 4r limited with 140k !

well, i figured something might be wrong, maybe with the transmission or something, but it is shifting smooth, and i dont recall the vibration in town when i was doing 35 or 40 and let off the gas and coasting up to a stop sign..

There is nothing high tech about U-joints, you don't need factory Toyota parts. If your going to have a shop do it, just take it to Aamco. They do lots of U-joints because people bring in cars all the time with "Transmission" problems and its just U-joints.

update you guys on my 4r, the dealer called today and said he did feel the vibration in the rear area of the 4r, looked at the rear u joint and said it was bad, and he told me i prob needed to replace both u joints so i agreed, go pick it up in the morn and hopefully the vibration is gone..

Try putting the grease gun to the joints before just tossing them out.

picked up the 4r this morn and it does ride better with the new u joints but there is still vibration from the rear end. cant really tell it until i get to about 60-70mph, guys from another forum say it could be a wheel bearing, does a bad wheel bearing sound possible ?

Very possible.

Mine turned out to be U-joints. The only bad about Yota joints is the fact they aren't servicable. When i did mine I got Precision joints with grease fittings. Grease them every other oil change.

My OEM ujoints have grease fittings......is that what you meant by "servicable"?

Seems to me the seal begins to leak first usually.

Mine dont look nothing like whats in that link. Maybe cause mines a 2wd im certain. I did not see any grease fittings on the driveshaft either when i was under the T4R earlier. I also have witnessed the vibration when accelerating then nothing when releasing the "GO" pedal. Also here a loud "PING" when shifting from Reverse to Drive (and vise-versa). Might need a spell check there. So knowing that my U-Joints don't have Grease Fittings (maybe) do i grease up the Outer area? If anyone has a site or similar that has a view of these fittings on a '97 2wd sr5 with rear drums, please let me know. Thank you in advance.

I have the same thing going on... minor "vibration" or rumble noise at 60-70mph. I've been troubleshooting it for a while concentrating on the drive shaft / ujoints, but the noise is still there.

I was thinking it may be wheel bearings... but if I take the DS out and drive around in 4WD, the vibration/noise goes away.

When I get some $$ saved up, I'm gonna replace the ujoints in the used drive shaft I picked up (it's 10 years old, was in the junkyard for ~7 years).

Yes that is your U joint and no you dont have grease fittings. Get some spicer u joints with the fittings and call it a day!

Thanks Justin. Do you know of any good sites that I could find some decent priced U-Joints? Going to start looking for a write-up for this project/fix so I can verify if could tackle this myself (not very experienced with RWD) on my day off.

I went to Oreilly's and got some U joints. Precision (name brand) samething as spicer iirc. Anyhow I was at work doing mine on a lift. Marked my driveshaft so I knew exactly where it came off so when I reinstall it, I wouldnt have a balance issue. Anyhow I had to step away from the truck to go finish some verification test. Anyhow came back out and my buddy did it for me already. He finished just under an hour taking his time.

Some hand tools and emery cloth is all ya need. Also grab ya a grease gun and some grease for good measure.
