Also. Seized caliper bad after this. Pulled in garage after work after noticing something wasnt right (shprt work commute but sje wasnt coasting efficiently) had bad burning smell amd hot rear passenger dust shield. Going to shop tomorrow morning. Smelt so bad I backed out of garage thinking of a fire. Going to inquire on lifetime caliper option. How ironic. Gotya pay to play...these brakes are bs though. I'm not drunk either just lazy RN.

i know i will take some heat for this....but why in the world would you want to submerge your vehicle in muddy water like that? i understand its kinda fun & if you have a dedicated vehicle to do that with thats fine or go with friends in theirs...

off roading & trail riding is one thing, going swimming in a daily driver is just asking for problems. especially with all the damage it does, you will never get that dirty water out of crevices & tight spots, it soaks the floors, gets in alternators, pulleys etc, not to mention the frame & brakes! with these 4runners being notorious for frame rust & sticking calipers etc. going swimming seems counterproductive.

no offense intended, just cant see doing that with a nice vehicle that is a daily driver...

my house, job (my office), and this area are 10 minutes apart. i own my vehicle and dont plan to get rid of it. i can buy a daily if i need to at any time. i clean it and stay on top of anything that pops up on it. the brakes are done as of an hr and a half ago and bulbs are ordered. my frame is in great shape and this truck is garaged every night. this trail and outter unmaintained roads are a lot of fun especially with half a foot + of snow. yewww

what type of offroading do you do with your 4runner? if none, id ask why you even have one.

im going to be getting a snorkel on this rig soon hopefully

So what do you do when you encounter a water hole on the trail? Just turn around?

submerging your vehicle in muddy water is a lot different than driving in rain... & road salt misting through the air does not completely coat the inside of the frame , in fact i doubt any actually gets fully inside the frame & other tight unseen areas. saying its a toyota so it can handle it is not true, some of these 4runner & tacoma frames will heavily rust or rot through just daily driving...

i do very little off roading & zero swimming in my 4runner. why do i even have one? i know there are lots of off roaders on this forum, but the majority of 4runner owners or any sport utility vehicle do not off road & definitely do not go swimming with their vehicles. a sport utility is just that, a utility vehicle without committing to a truck... i use mine for utility purposes, carryiing & hauling loads a truck is not needed for, light towing of cars, boats or campers etc. & mostly living in the midwest with snowy winters, i use it for the 4WD capability on teh roads when needed. to imply you should only have a 4runner/sport utility if you off road & go swimming is rather far fetched to say the least.

youre missing the point, i dont go off roading enough or so heavily that i would encounter a water hole so deep it goes up to my grille!

i also own some classic muscle cars, the original low mile ones i keep stock & take care of them, the one i use for drag racing is purpose built for that use & has 550hp, but i dont try to daily drive it.

Keep an eye on the driver side floorboard during these activities. Water in that area will ruin your ECM, which is an expensive fix. There have been lots of horror stories of the same nature.

Impressive that it cruised right through though. Don’t be afraid to get it dirty!

all good, no worries. im not that worried about it and while i do stay on it and keep it nice, im in a position where i could be okay completely ruining it, not that i plan to.

if it were just for snow driving id still be running a lowered GTI or WRX with bridgestone blizzacks. the front wheel drive GTI that i couldnt roll a baseball under was unstoppable with those tires even climbing snowy hills and driveways in the white mountains - whilst getting 30 mpg.

knock on wood like i said it hasnt thought about getting stuck. i go out with people and have good recovery gear, xbul x4 (snow), 60" farm jack...

heres how we ran it a few weeks ago, the iceburgs add an element for sure, have to be more careful.

some more perspective. on satellite images these holes are seen from space...no joke for sure. darn i got rid of the one i was thinking of because it was blurry.

heres a tamer outside trail for more of a tour or when theres snow or a lot of rain and the video-trail is a bit too much for my liking (i use judgement with this area to an extent) my coworker sent that stock height, aftermarket duratracs through the tough sections from the ice day, water to his hood, 35k dollar truck.

good call and after a bunch of thinking these 4th gens are the 'cheapest' way to wheel i think too. the truck seems more capable than my open diff TJ on 33s and 2" from years ago.

there is nothing wrong with that at all, like i said, everyone has different opinions & ways to go about their hobbies. but a purpose built racing car is not really comparable to a daily driver SUV that is put through water. although racing is considered harder on a vehicle than normal driving, it doesnt come close to the damage caused by dirty or clean water getting into places its not designed to go. i agree with the purpose built idea, just cant wrap my head around submerging my 4runner in water that deep.

crawling over things & off roading on trails, preferably dry for me, is fun & what these are designed for, but my post & whole point is that purposely going through water that is up to your grille or deeper & needing a snorkel is not my idea of fun in a vehicle i want to keep nice & is used as a daily driver, for some the only vehicle they have. all the things i mentioned can have issues & i didnt even mention the electronics like montijo505 did. water is not good for any part on a car & submerging the truck up to its grille is not remotely close to driving in rain or smaller puddles that dont come up to the frame & floors, or higher!

if you can afford to do that to your 4runner then more power to you, im all for off roading & trails etc, just makes me cringe when i see nice trucks & suvs go swimming... the fun to damage risk is too high for me

nice looking subaru, friend has one built up pretty badass capable of 600+ hp on e85.

ive been around the block a few times too, as a teenager i had a 78 trans am with a 455 engine which was the biggest engine GM made & very fast for back then, did some mild upgrades to it & daily drove it, but only because i had no choice back then, i beat the crap out of that thing daily & had all kinds of fun... but in the end it did not last doing double duty & part of me wishes i would have taken a little better care of it & held onto it, would be worth a lot of $$ today.
