Hey gang - 2005 4Runner SR5. All stock, no major mods, not heavily driven. 192K and runs like a champ. But I think I need to replace the electric motor below the master brake cylinder. Can anyone point me in the direction of a video or tutorial on this? And can I do it without removing the entire master cylinder? I can't seem to find anything on the process.
Backstory for those who are curious: When starting, the ABS, Brake, VSC lights come on (as they should), but then 90% of the time they STAY on (see attached photo). They don't go out. However after it has been driven for a while, when I turn it off and restart it, the lights behave normally (turn off almost instantly).
It's been happening for years. At first it only happened in colder weather. But now it happens almost every day. Cold, warm, rain, shine. Starting on the less expensive end, someone once suggested replacing the gas cap. Tried that but didn't work. Fluid level is fine. Even replaced the brake light switch. Tried scanning for ABS codes while the lights were on (modern scanner, yes it searches for these codes), but nothing came up. I even replaced the front wheel bearings and wheel speed sensors. Still no change.
However when the lights are ON, I noticed that I don't hear the electric motor engaging with the brakes (when it works it sounds normal; no weird noises). I am referring to the minor 'buzzing' sound you hear when the brakes are pressed. And braking does require a bit more effort, but still works fine (not like I'm pressing all the way to the floor). So while the brakes seem to be working fine, I am inclined to think the electric motor is going bad and should be replaced.
Anyone have a suggestion on how to do this without removing the entire master cylinder? Write-ups or videos would be very helpful. Thank you!!
