VIN decode for 4 or 6 cylinder and 2WD or 4WD?

hi all. new poster here.

i have been researching this for awhile and i am finding either partial or incomplete information (and/or broken links).

can anyone help me figure out if there is a definitive piece of information (ideally something i can print out) that can help me determine whether a particular 4 runner VIN is 4 cyl or 6 cyl and whether it is a 2WD or 4WD? i would also really be interested in figuring out what the trim of a particular model is.

i basically have the 10th digit all figured out (and was looking at a 4 runner last night that was advertised as a year younger than it actually was...) but i can't figure out how to decode the other #'s (with 4 - 6 seemingly very important for this).

i have researched this via google and i have read and re-read a thread on the forum that attempted to address this.

i own a 98 tacoma 4wd and am in the market for a newer 4 runner but would ideally like to get 6 cylinder and 4wd.

Well, if you are looking at 4th gen's there is not a 4 cylinder, only 6 and 8. Look here for what the other #'s mean:

How about looking at the door jamb and looking at the mfg. date and then popping the hood to see if it is a V6 or V8. Also, if it is a 4wd 4runner look at the H2/H4 Transfer case switch in the dash. If it has H2 then it has the V6. The Vin is easily copied wrong or typed in wrong in online ads. I wouldn't rely on it for your search.

Plug the VIN into Toyota's Service History page.
