vinyl wrap roof rack rail question

Anyone else wrapped the roof rack rails? I sprayed min w/ plastidi, which was awesome until I reinstalled the cross rails and I ripped the dip.

Has anyone else been in the same situation? And will the vinyl rip as well?

Haven't wrapped a roof rail yet, but I've done wraps for a living.

I'll say it depends on how you wrap the inner edge. Anything that slides against the vinyl is going to wear it down, although if you just put the rails on and never move them again, you'll probably be just fine.

Depending on how well the vinyl sticks down, and what vinyl you use up there, you may or may not need to use a primer so it doesn't peel off again.

And no, not grey spray paint primer! 3M's tape primer #94 is what you will want to use. Its an adhesive promoter that goes on clear and is invisible, but will make vinyl stick (on just the edges, do NOT do the whole rail!!!!) like it was superglue on your skin!!!!!

If you do wrap it, because there's very little curvature to it, I'd recommend a good cast vinyl, and if you've never wrapped anything long before, make sure its air release vinyl.

I platidiped mine. Put a rack on it, and haven't had an issue yet. Go through car washes at least once a week and looks as good as the first day.

I am interested in this as well. I am hoping to do the wind deflector for my gobi rack. It's a flat metal piece so should be easier to do then the whole rack. Thinking of doing a splinter camo in tundra color. I need to find a place in San Diego that would do it!

I had gotten my roof rack and roof wrapped with 3M vinyl about 6 months ago. Everything is holding up well, and no issues with the cross rails. I think the installer placed the edge inside the rack.

I used truck bed liner. Looks good so far, but it's only been 7 months and I haven't put a lot of stuff up there.

I had mine painted at a local body shop. They look great. I only paid about $70. Can't go wrong for that price!

Just get them powder coated and be done with it.

I've done two set by removing them and sand and paint with Rustoleum.

2015 SR5 Vinyl Wrap Rails and End Caps

Hey guys, new member but not new to the forum. Thought I could chime in since I got a lot of help with my decision from this thread.

I had the roof rails and end caps of my 2105 SR5 wrapped in 3M 1080 Series Satin Black. I had doubts about choosing satin over matte but I'm really glad I went with satin. The 1080 3M Satin black is more matte than it is gloss; exactly what I wanted.I removed the silver roof rails from the black mounting brackets along with the end caps ahead of time so it would be easier for the installer to wrap. I also specifically asked to leave the channel open so I can move my OEM crossbars freely for any roof/ski rack. I left a slider from the OEM cross bars on each roof rail when I handed them to the installer so he could measure where to start/stop the vinyl.
When reinstalling the rails, I wrapped thread seal tape around the white nipples in the truck body, that the mounting brackets bolt to. This was probably over cautious (especially because I live in So. California) but that is a weak spot for a potential leak into the cabin. A silicone bead around the bottom would have been ideal.
