Viper 5901 Car Alarm

I just purchased the Viper 5901 car alarm from Amazon. Thing cost me like $225. I also purchased the XK05 Xpresskit preloaded bypass for the remote start, vehicle tilt, backup battery and glass sensor. I've called around local shops to install but as you might guess they want anywhere from $300 - $500. Ironically Bestbuy was the cheapest.

So I'm pondering if I should attempt installing this massive alarm myself. I've never installed an alarm but if I have very good instructions I can probably get through it. Anyone ever self-install an alarm in their Runner? It wouldn't happen to be a Viper 5901 with remote start would it?

ive tackled most all things on my 4th gen including doing a engine swap but when it comes to a alarm install.... hell no!!

i have the same alarm but the clifford version i think, mine was the top of the line, there are like 50 different wires!!

I've got the Python version of this alarm installed on my '98 at a local high-volume shop. It took them about 4 1/2 hours to do it. I didn't need a bypass for mine so this is the low end timeframe for a professional.

I had removed the stock VIP3000 alarm from the car before they installed the Python. It took me about a hour and a half to rip out the old alarm.

Well. This happens to be my profession and I can say that this could be very mind bogglin' and very rough task.

I'd say go to a decent workshop.

If you *really* want to be so masochistic to try this yourself... you can probably find wire info on http://www.the12volt.com and other places on ze internetz.

But I do warn you, this might take you few days if you aren't used to work with car electrics...

Hey s-one I have the same alarm. It is in my 2002 4runner limited, i also was debating on installing it myself but opted to get it done at a shop. They charged me 75$ for install plus had to buy some module that i needed priced at 60$, at this point they were about 3 hours working in my car that i had no choice to pay, I wanted to go home by then. If i had to do it again i would still pay, save yourself some headaches.

Whoa! $75 and $60?! Proudrunner you're in SoCal where did you get this done? Been happy with their service? Happy with the alarm? Hmm... I just check with BB again and they are quoting me $265 for install. Just the base unit and the remote start. I may have them do the windows module too. I can probably do the rest afterwards. Man that $265 could pay for one of my M/T tires... or an expensive lawn chair, beer and a headache free alarm installation. hmmm... *thinking*

I installed my 5901 Myself in my 01'. If you are experienced in electrical and know your way around a soldering iron it shouldn't be that difficult, it just takes a lot of time. Also if you are afraid of cutting factory wires this install is not for you. Proudrunner, what shop in socal did you go to? $75 for an install is a ridiculously low price, if i was going to charge to install one it would be at least $200.

I work in Los Angeles the shop I believe is on central and 18Th not certain but can find out I have their phone number I would post when I get home. Overall im happy with the install, i paid about 270.00 for the alarm, it came out to be about 400.00 with taxes. The place is a wharehouse and it is always busy they have everything that www.wooferect.com has and their prices are almost identical. May be worth the trip if you can save some money.

ok.. thanks all for the info and tips. I received the alarm and I decided I'm going to let BB do this. Right around $275. I'm getting ready for a 2 week vacation and I'm afraid I just won't take my time and even if I did complete it, I don't want something go haywire during my trip. can someone PLEASE help me out...i cant figure out what i need to do...when i hit unlock on my viper 5901 remote, it unlocks all the doors at once which is what i dont want. I want to be able to to unlock the drivers door with one push and then the rest of the doors with a second push...what do i do or look for??
