Volant CAI, Powercore filter information 4.7L V8

So I had sent an email to Volant's tech support asking about ordering a Powercore filter replacement for my CAI's Pro 5 filter. They responded with some information about the powercore filter, sealing off the rest of the compartments, and their effects, the "scoop" fitting, and made a comment about my Borla dual exhaust system. They also commented on replacing a part for me which I thought was nice...

Volant Tech:
"Currently the powercore filter that will fit in the 18747 air box will not flow enough cfm for the 4.7L engine causing a loss in hp and poor shift points. As for a ram air scoop it's not out of the question and we might make one in the future but the cost of the 38640 scoop mold was over 30k.
Volant only builds scoops for the top sellers like the Duramax, Silverado, Titan, Tundra etc, We have only sold 22 18747's this year it only fits one model and is only a three year run so we would never make our money back on the scoop. If you know other 4runner owners that are interested in a scoop and you can provide me with something I can take to the owner it will help out quite a bit. As for the hole in the front air takes the path of least resistance so air is being pulled from the larger hole not the smaller one, once your suv gets moving there is more air entering the air box than the motor pulls in so the air not being pulled in needs some place to go so it exits out the smaller hole if you cap the hole the air will have to fight the incoming air flow causing turbulence and a loss of hp, It's easier to picture it in traffic terms having one entrance and one exit makes for a smoother passage than having only one entrance/exit. That being said If you would like a cap I will send you one If you would like a piece of trim for the airbox to the fender I can send one as well, If you send a photo of the damaged air duct I will replace it free of charge, On a side note having a dual exhaust system with 2 2in pipes equals a single 4in unless your over 550hp this is too much pipe and not enough back pressure meaning you are losing low end performance you will see a better gain with a single 3in system"

Whoa there buddy, did you just say that my expensive Borla system is robbing me of low end performance? What do you all think about any of this?

the borla is not really a true dual exhaust, & engines with alot less than 550 hp have used this type of faux dual system, its really only 1 into the muffler with 2 exits, but to a point, i believe its true, thats why i completly sealed off my volant cai,including into the fender. i also use the powercore 61510, with hiflo maf sensor & find that this combination works very well. IMO, i regained all & better low end throttle response than with the old volant wet filter. in short, it works fine for me but everybodies different.

Are you looking to get a list together for a price on a bulk order?

Chaz is 100% on his comment on your exhaust.. I'm looking into the investment myself (borla cat back dual exhaust), but am wondering how much I would be benefiting.. My exhaust is already 3.0" and that is stock. The advantage of the borla system is the mandrel bends and chrome (I like bling).

So, if you are interested in putting together a list of guys looking for a price, count me in.

I was not intending on starting a group buy. I was asking the volant team if anything could be done to get a powercore filter made for the 4runner instead of a mod. I also asked about sealing off the box better lile chaz had done. Then I was shocked to hear him say my borla is causing a power loss at low end.

Before I put my volant back in I need a new filter. It suffered some damage when the tube slipped off. Not fun. The tube made contact with my fan blades and I pulled the kit out and put my stock airbox with the k&n drop in filter back in. I also ripped out that screen someone called it the "hydro carbon filter". I never noticed any gain though.

I have both and love them,the Volant was leaking so i took it off and contacted Volant.Daniel at Volant told me they are working on getting a Powercore filter for the 4.7 CAI.The Borla is great and sounds fab.Remember an engine is an air pump you need more air coming in before installing larger exhaust to let air out.You lose to much backpressure.I learned this years ago,i had a 1000 hp Mustang 5.0 professionally prepared by OUTRAGEOUS MUSTANGS.

Hey,

I've been doing a bunch of research. I'm going to go for it and throw powercore 61507 on my AfE 51-82502 dry. After all the research I've done, I'm not worried about it not flowing enough, imo it will out flow the stock setup. I'll keep you guys updated on how it works, I'll have to wait for a while though as my AfE is on backorder until 3/26 :| either way if anyone else out there is still holding on to the donaldson powercore dream......stay tuned
