VSC Light Stays On

Was wondering if anyone ever had this issue: loading up the 4Runner and having the VSC light stay on?

On a couple instance lately, we have loaded it up - without a trailer - and the light comes on when on the road. It doesn't go off until I turn the ignition off (for instance when refueling - not when we unload). I figure with me, wife, dog, gas & a few supplies, we may be approaching 950 lbs. The payload limit is about 1200.

Anyway, the dealer says they can't do anything as the light is out by the time I can get it to them, and the codes are erased. The one code that was in there suggested that the vehicle was riding too low. I figure this was when we rented a trailer with a 500 lb. tongue weight. A that point we probably were very close to the 1200 lb. limit, and I do remember the VSC lights staying on then.

I've got 2000 miles left on my warranty, and about 6 weeks before our travel trailer comes in. Hoping to figure it out before then!

there is no way your codes will clear since you have an obd2 computer.

is the cel (check engine light) coming on as well?

the vsc should have nothing to do w/ veh payload as i've loaded my truck w/ lots of goodies (including all the armor) and no vsc light.

something sounds fishy.

obd2 computer? Is that better than an r2d2? LOL Sounds like you know about these. They are saying it only contains "hard codes," like the one that said it was riding too low, or unlevel.

No check engine light, or anything else. Just the VSC comes on for an extended period, usually when loaded going around a corner. The light & the sound stay on for a little while, then both VSC lights come on & stay on untill I turn the engine off.

I'm thinking of loading up my in-laws & a few things this Saturday - getting up to around 1000 lbs. (including gas), and see if it happens. If so, I will take it in then so they can read the code - since they say it clears out.

Also, the service guy noticed that the rear rubber body bumper had hit the rear axle. He could tell because it was very dusty due to the dirt roads I was on while camping this past weekend. I think he was trying to say I was overloaded. But I know I wasn't, and was no more than perhaps 800 lbs. The dirt roads leading to Toroweap (remote Grand Canyon) are bumpy, but my Altima could do most of it, albeit carefully. He said he hardly ever has seen where the rubber mounts have hit the axle. I think this must be because most of the vehciles around Scottsdale never see anything close to moderate off-road conditions!

I'm not clear on what's going on here.

when you say vsc light stays on, do you mean it shows this "VSC Trac Off"? or something like that right? do you also see the X (for center diff) light on too or no?

does this light stay on even on hard surfaces too? it could be that the traction control is lit cuz it's slipping? not sure but if the vsc stays on while on the asphalt, then something doesn't sound right.

you do have the vsc button disengaged right? (have center unlocked)? just making sure since you don't have to drive w/ the center locked at all.

The codes should not clear just because you turn off your 4runner (or that's what I was led to believe.

As for the load, that shouldn't matter. My vehicle load dry weight is approximately 650# including the driver (The amount of metal I've added doesn't help me one bit). Add camping gear and approxmiately 25 gals of water and I'm talkin severely pushing the limits of the vehicle. Regardless I've never experienced anything of this kind though. sorry

The VSC light comes on, then in just a little bit the VSC OFF light comes on. The two of them stay on. Acoording to the maual, when this happens there is a problem & to take it in.

It has always happened while on pavement.

sounds like it needs some lovin at the stealership. good luck

mine did something similar after doing the sulfur TSB. The VSC and the VSC OFF light both illuminated. I took it back to the dealership and they had to replace a faulty sensor or something like that. I have the work order somewhere.

But basically, it never turned off, the lights where on ALL the time until I took it back to them.

Doesn't that have something to do with recalibrating the Yaw sensors?

Maybe he has a faulty Yaw sensor?

I asked about the yaw sensor. The stealer tech person said it had more to do with the steering, but who knows!?

I'm having a similar problem but it's when I use my center diff lock, the lights stay on even if I unlock until I shut off the vehicle
