VSC light traction light, but *no* CEL, *no* abs light

2004 4 runner.

I have the above condition:
VSC light is on.
Traction Control light is on.

CEL never has come on. Neither has ABS light


I tried searching for this condition, but all
the threads indicate CEL on.


I have tried zero point calibration (no luck).
I have tried disconnecting battery for 10 minutes.


How can this be diagnosed further?


Trying to avoid stealership where they will want
to replace everything but the VIN plate.

Is your center diff lock on? I know it disables VSC, can't remember if it does TRAC also.

Nope---but I went out and toggled it to make sure.

I re-tried zeroing vsc.

No joy.

From what I could find with a quick search sounds like it could be a speed sensor problem. See this thread:

I saw some other threads that mentioned something similar that turned out to be a bad alternator/battery voltage but I think those all had CEL lights on too. Maybe just stop by and have those checked before you go crazy trying to find a problem with a speed sensor.

Thanks but I had read that post. That guy's problem also is not resolved
by the end of the thread. In his case the speed sensor was triggering ABS and the VSC needs ABS to work.


I *do not* have ABS code set. ABS works fine.

Try changing your gas cap. I went to Autozone for a free autoscan. It detected the gas cap.

There is no CEL---car passes all inspections (inc obd read)

Purely a VSC code. I wanted to know if they are
readable without a Toyota specific OBD reader.

I have a generic OBD reader but it doesn't seem
to access the VSC codes....Is there a method for
reading vsc codes (such as Key-on key off type protocol)

Very few shops have a scanner that can access the vsc ecu. Bite the bullet and go to the dealer.

2003 limited.
