VSC TRAC and VSC OFF lights (help and advise needed)

Hi all,

Recently my VSC Trac and VSC off light both came on. It's spurratic, usally when I start the car in the morning. It usually goes away after I turn the off the engine and restart the car. However this morning, it came on when I was driving.

Is it me or do these lights contradict each other?

I did some seraches on the forum and verified there was a recall (however mine did NOT have the check engine light come like the others), I had it at the dealer the other night and they mentioned there were no codes stored, so they could not replace it yet. They mentioned it would take a few hours, and it was pretty late (which is why I think the recall work wasn't done on the spot).

I have two questions main:

1). I just recently had a remote starter alarm put in. Any chance that could attribute to these lights?

2). Is it safe for me to drive with both these lights on? I plan on driving 8 hours to NYC for turkey day.

By any chance, did you engage your center diff (check left console dash by the steering wheel). Engaging the center diff would ultimately turn off vsc.

I'm surprised the dealership had on clue. I'd take it elsewhere to confirm the findings though just to be safe. I never like to see lights come on so have it checked out.

Based on your description of the probelm it is safe to drive your 4runner. Just realize the traction control system is not working.

Don't know if this would help, but i had that light come on with another, and took it to the dealer to have it checked.. they told me it was just a loose gas cap and just fixed it for me in 5 mins. Just my small input though, not sure if it helps or not

why it came on still puzzles me... even for a loose gas cap..

but from reading similar threads to these lights here, it deals with a few sensors or some things etc..

Usually that would trigger the CEL (check engine light) too though. I would suspect it's something trivial but safe to say have it inspected regardless as it's better to safe than sorry.

Thanks for all the input guys. I guess i feel better about making the 8 hour trip tomorrow.

In regards to the center-differential lock, I did "play" with it and the 4wd settings (just to make sure everything works). However the light for that is definitely off (along with the 4wd).

The fact that these lights some on spuratically, drives me nuts! Good thing is that I restart the truck and they should go away until the next time the lights decides to show up.

Time to make a trip to the dealership when I get back...

I had a very similar problem. Basically the same, except the check engine light also went on. After THREE trips to the dealer, they determined that a small fitting somewhere on the exhaust line was loose, and this caused the problem. It was also a five min. fix.
