VW Touareg vs. 4Runner

I know this guy who thinks his VW Touareg is the greatest SUV ever put on this planet. He brags that it won some altitude contest and that it can drive at some 40 degree angle or whatnot. Anyway, I did a Google search and came up with a thread on VWvortex which members were comparing the Touareg and the 4Runner. Here is the link:

There are some VERY interesting comments on there, take a look for yourself. Here are some notables:

Chuck Cheeze (nice sn btw): "I looked at a 4runner the other day. In my Touareg's rear view mirror!"
- Who the heck races SUVs? If I wanted something FAST, I sure wouldn't be buying an SUV (ok maybe a Cheyenne, but you get my point).

- This is news to me. The Touareg is better offroad????? hmmm

- I'm still trying to figure this one out. This guy later goes on to say that his Touareg died the first weekend he had it. How ironic!


Someone says later that VWs are better than Toyotas in terms of risidual value. This is absolute nonsense! I had an Audi A4 which dropped in value like crazy and I have a friend who has a 2004 Audi S4 and it seems like it drops about $1,000/month in value. VWs can't be much different.

Anyways, I know this thread on that forum was from a few years back, but seriously. Some of the information on there was absolutely insane and I figured I would share it with you guys to see what you guys think. Sorry if this is a re-post.

- Independent suspension with absolutely ZERO articulation!

That's exactly what I was thinking!! You hit the nail on the head.
BTW, he's definitely not a friend of mine. Just some freshman punk who sat behind me in one of my classes this past quarter. I just couldn't believe the words that came out of his mouth. It's almost like he was trying to sound like an imbicile.

We must keep in mind that people on forums like those are there because they are fanatics of that particular type of vehicle, and of course they are clearly biased (and often trying to justify a purchase).

I pick up the April issue of Consumer Reports every year - their annual auto issue. Here are some factoids you can share with your poor Tworag buddy.

April 2007 issue, page 11 - percent of survey respondents who said they would definitely get their car again:

• Two mid-sized SUVs are listed as the "Most Satisfying:" Lexus RX350 (82%) and Toyota 4Runner (80%).
• Four mid-sized SUVs are listed as the "Least Satisfying," and the last place finisher is the VW Touareg at a dismal 43%.

Pages 80 and 81 list used cars that are "good and bad bets." The T4R is listed in the "Good Bets" sidebar, while the "Bad Bets" box includes the mighty vee-dub.

I suppose they somehow see this as a status thing, but exactly why escapes me...

funny because from my research, i see the v8 4runner at 7.2 0-60 and the toureg at 7.5.

Alright, my mistake then. It just didn't look very sarcastic. I saw all of those things listed in favor of a VW and I was immediately like WTF?

LOL, didn't know comparing a T-reg with a 4R can be a topic from those vw guys.

first of all, back in 4 years ago, when T-reg first came out, me and wifey went to local vw dealer and test drove it. Because we were planning to get ourselves a suv for long run and we didn't go test drive the 4R (actually at that time, i still couldn't accept the look of the 4th gen because i was in love with the 3rd gen). well anyway, we took a v6 out for a run, and honestly it is a great suv comparing to my mom's ML320 (it is a total POS anway). The T-reg is a bit heavy you can tell, but overall are pretty good and we locked our choice into a T-reg for a good 8 months.

We didn't buy it because i want to see what is their first years' recall/problem and also their depreciation. Thank god we didn't buy it, LOL. After couple months of some longterm ownership report from magazine, holy moly, the T-reg's reliability is pretty much like my mom's POS. And their resale value drops a lot.

Then me and my wife's suv plan prosponed due to some business plan. Until a few months ago when we decided bring the suv plan back and ready to lease a suv for ourselves, we simply both agree on a 4R without thinking other suv (except GX470 and LC but they are over our budget )

we never sat in a 4R before, until we went to pick up ours at the dealership, that was our first time test drive a 4R. Honestly, cabin noise both T-reg and 4R are very similar, for the interior, i do agree T-reg looks more upscale and high class. But 4R doesn't look bad either, i really love the interior of the 4R.

As far as the residue value, i am sure 4R has a better number than T-reg and also the resale market price does affect.

well, that's my little story about the T-reg and 4R IMHO. The more i drive the 4R the more i like it!! Too bad my wife's been taking it for past 3 weeks already.... i am stuck in my 4 door Accord for now...

Whenever I get a new ride (new to me) I test everything I can get my ass in driver's seat. I tried out a T-reg and its actually pretty nice. I hadn't read up on reliability yet, but something seemed fishy. The TPMS lights were on, but the tires looked fine. Plus the controls were very complicated. The sales-idiot said the TPMS light was on because its on during normal function (BS!) and that I would "get used" to the controls, even reaching over for the heat or volume (I can't remember). But I'll tell ya, that light alone drove me away. Not ONE of my idiot lights on the 4runner has lit up yet, exept the self check mode when I start it. Its been a great 15,000 trouble-free 4runner miles so far, hopefully more to come!

FWIW - I drove the VW before I bought the T4R. It was very nice, but waaay overpriced and it rode like crap. You got a solid thud in the backside if you ran over a toothpick...very harsh and noncompliant ride. I happen to like the way they look inside and out, but looks dont get you from point a to point b. I was coming out of a Dodge and looking for some real relaiability and durability. This is my first Toyota and I see it as a great purchase. Toyotas are not real inspiring but they do the job they were designed to do and have a great value at the end of ownership as well.
