W56-b to G54

Hello all,

So back in November the original transmission in my 86 decided it had enough and wanted to leave this cruel earth. After a few weeks of searching I came across one that my buddy had. It was in one of his pickups and he had just had it rebuilt with maybe 500 miles on the rebuild when he totaled the truck. He sold me the transmission for $300 and told me that he had $500 in the rebuild. So I bought it and installed it with a new clutch, master cylinder, slave cylinder, Aisin clutch kit, starter, rear main, so on and so forth. Well back in February and only about 1500 miles or so on this rebuilt transmission it blew up on me late one night. I pulled the transmission and when I drained the oil multiple pieces of broken gear teeth came out with it... wonderful. So I found multiple different rebuild kits online with a wide range of price tags, but no where can I find replacement gears only bearings and seals. I plan on tearing into the transmission this weekend, but if I cant salvage the gears I need out of the original transmission I'm SOL because I cannot afford a rebuilt one from Marlin and can't find another W56 anywhere here in Arkansas. HOWEVER my father-in-law has a 84 PU in his salvage yard with either a G52 or G54 trans in it and he said I can have the transmission for free. From the reading i've done, this transmission will fit in my truck. My questions are 1) Will the clutch I bought and installed for my W56 work for the G series trans? 2) Can I use my current transfer case with the G series trans if I purchase the block off plate from Marlin Crawler since my current transfer case is a top shift and the one in the donor truck is a forward shift? Sorry for the long post, just trying to figure out my options and get my truck back on the road ( its my daily ).

the clutch will work, Marlin sells a clutch that fits both the G and W series transmissions.

As for the plate, it would probably be easier to just call Marlin and ask them what you need to swap over to the G series transmission and what will or won't work.

You could install the G52/4 with the forward shift case too with out issue if that saves you $$

LOL :laugh: have any of you guys ever tried calling Marlin? Its just about as hard to get through to the president, as it is to talk to someone at marlin.

While my Marlin transmission is ~ok, their customer relations are a joke.

I called them about a month ago, talked to someone right away.

^ haha could be? anyways i must have tried calling them over 30+ times, countless emails were ignored, faxes were ignored, whatever.

I thought that even with the poor customer relations the transmission must still be the best, but no... when the transmission arrived after a lengthy wait, BOTH the fill and drain plugs were cross threaded on and still to this day require gasket-maker to seal, and the transmission has a really hard time downshifting to 4th from 5th, its like you have to count 2 seconds while holding the clutch down to engage 4th. :clap2:

all things considered, I will never purchase another product from Marlin.

No joke.. Haven't been able to get a hold of them.. Thanks for the replies folks. Sorry for the delay, been busy with school and work. I think I have decided to just keep the t-case that's with the G series trans to save a few bucks and headache. Going to go ahead and order new hydraulics, even though I just replaced it all with AISIN stuff I still could not get it to bleed or one of the parts was bad. SO gonna go ahead and re do both of them since i'm right there anyway. Also thinking about ordering the braided flex clutch line from Marlin to replace the old rubber POS, and throwing in a new release bearing for added insurance. Does anyone know the fluid capacities off the top of their head for the G series trans, and the transfer case behind it?? Thanks again folks.
