Waht would happen if mixed red cap and yellow cap coolant?

What would happen if I mixed the red cap and the yellow cap coolant?

hi All,

I added some red cap coolant to my 2005 runner about a year ago. Not very much, maybe about 16FL OZ. Now I realized I should have used the yellow cap kind instead of the red cap.

The question is, would it hurt the runner? Should I flush it?

The more prominent issue would be why you had to add it in the first place. Was the reservoir low, because that may have just been a cool engine (which is a normal condition). If you are going through that much coolant, you may have a bigger issue.

As for the two types, you are fine with that little. It will simply lower the life-span of your existing coolant by, maybe 5,000 miles (big whoop). They are pretty much compatible with each other, but I really don't see much of a difference between long-life and super long-life in all the toyotas that have come through our shop. In the future, just add whatever is meant for your specific model, and try not to mix them if possible. Also, its better to get the concentrated if avaliable, instead of that pre-mixed stuff. I much prefer to dilute it to my standards, or to fit the customers needs. Aka: higher coolant percentage for extreme hot/cold conditions etc.

Next issue is determining why you had to add coolant, because you never should have too, especially on a toyota that is so young.

Thanks Jeff4runner. The reason I added was because the reservoir was low, so I added to the "Full" mark.

It is actually normal to lose a bit of coolant as time goes on. Half a reservoir in 5 years would be considered normal.
