Wait time for a new Vehicle?

Folks- First let me express my sincere gratitude to all your posts. I have never owned a 4runner or a Toyata in my life. I had not planned to until my girlfriend convinced me to look into the 2010. I was sold then even more impressed after reading this forums. Again, many thanks!

The issue I have here at this time is this:

1. I placed an order on a new 2010 4Runner limmited with all the options possible including the 3rd row seat on May 27, 2010.

2. At the time of the deposit I was told this is a "special order" due to the 3rd row seat which is hard to find. (Im based in Wash DC/Alexandria VA if that matters). The wait could be up to 12 weeks.

3. After 8 weeks I started *****ing to the dealer on whether I was getting the truck. I received confirmation from my salesmen that the store was indeed getting the "special order" truck directed to them. No date of arrival was given and the delaer was still waiting for a letter with this date.

4. After 12 weeks- today I went back and they said they still do not know of the trucks arrival time as they have yet to recieve a letter form Toyota. The inventory manager then said it may be up to 5-6 months as my truck is being shipped from Japan due to the "special order" (3rd row seat).

5. The biggest blow was this: it s not going to be the 2010 model- it is going to be the 2011 model. I was like WTF?! I know that there is minimial changes as mentioned in this forums but specifically what? I then told the dealer- If Im going to be paying 40K for a vehicle I better damn well know what changes there will be. He is supposed to e mail me with a list of changes.


So all in all its been a long wait and I know its worth it but.... can anyone verify if this is normal or standard procedure? Also if anyone knows specifically what changes there will be?

That stinks... If you find one at another dealer can you get your deposit back? The 3rd Row option is fairly common on the 4Runners I've seen at the dealers here in San Diego. I only waited a month or so to find the color I liked without the 3rd row.

That stinks... If you find one at another dealer can you get your deposit back? The 3rd Row option is fairly common on the 4Runners I've seen at the dealers here in San Diego. I only waited a month or so to find the color I liked without the 3rd row.

As you say that's in San Diego (other side of the country relative to the DC area). Here in TX (a little closer) third rows and 4x4 are extremely hard to get.....in fact we waited for 3.5 months for ours.

so in a nut shell, expect to wait around 3 months for a special order from the date that toyota confirmed the order. Ask your dealer if they have confirmed the order, I intepret this as the date where your order is in their factory system and at some point that combo will pop out the assembly line in Japan.

PD. based on Deaf4RunnerDC original post..not trying to be rude or anything.. i was not sure if you knew but all runers are made in Japan.. special order or not and in fact they call it special order...but in reality its still within the build specs they just combined the right choices for you..moreover....I want to say that they just merely tag one with your specs to your dealer and routed accordingly to ensure you get it instead of some random dealer....

There are definitely Limited models with 3rd row up in the Boston/Southern NH area. If you can get out of your contract, which I am guessing you can based on the ridiculous wait time, grab a southwest ticket from Baltimore to Manchester, NH for $49 and have the dealer pick you up at the airport. I guess it comes down to how long you want to wait. Good Luck!

For comparison, I ordered April 26th and took delivery 15 days ago. So you are still 2 weeks ahead of when mine arrived at this point.

Of course we all get the dealer babble. Within 4 weeks of my "special order" I was told the unit was allocated by Toyota. I did not pester my dealer at all, but when I checked in for an update mid July I was told it still was not in production yet. At this point another manager got involved. He explained he could not "pluck" the vehicle of my specifications from another dealer region, and since my region did not get Nav equipped Trails I thought I was stuck waiting for my exact unit. Next day he finds one at sea in my specified configuration and is able to steer it our way. From that point it was only 3 weeks.

I was most content waiting, and in the end I wrote a check for almost the whole thing with the extra time to save. Since I was never in a hurry I did not nag, but perhaps if you do one can be diverted your way. I'll say this, there were times I thought of settling for a different model just to be done, but to actually drive to the dealer's lot and see it completely wrapped in plastic after it came off the truck was awesome. So worth the wait. Hang in there and make sure you get all the options you want :hello:

I was told at least a 3 month wait for my special order. There were no Blizzard pearl limiteds in the entire north east when I ordered mine (well there was one in CT and 1 in VA but they were both spoken for.) My sales manager had a special hook and located 1 that was to be delivered to Maryland from japan and had it re-routed to NJ then trucked to LI. If it was going to be the 3 plus month wait I was just going to order a 2011 anyway, but I got lucky. I think it was around a 6 week wait till I picked mine up in July.

My wait was 19 days. I know another who placed the same preference request for an identical vehicle last December and still didn't have one a month after I got mine.

Here's the deal: any talk of regional restrictions is complete and utter BS. Toyota can reroute any available combination it wants to any dealer it wants by simply assigning it to a different boat; they all come from the same place. The regional managers decide what they are going to add (like running boards in the SE), what preferences they are going to request in the next shipment, etc. The local dealer places a preference request when it makes it's allotment request, and Toyota fills it if they can. The difference between getting what you want and waiting forever is riding their ass until they figure out that you are not going away, demanding proof of the submitted request, and a set-in-stone deadline at which point they return your deposit.

Like I mentioned, it took 19 days from the time I placed a deposit to the time I drove away in my truck. It took me a month to find someone willing to do the work, however.

Down here in Charleston, there is a Black on Black 4x4 Limited, third-row, Nav, Toyoguard, Window Tint. It is on the lot at the dealer, Gene Reed Toyota. I wouldn't wait that long to get my truck...just my one cent... Mine doesn't have third row seat, but does have Nav and beige leather, and it took two weeks for them to get it from the port in Jacksonville, FL. Seemed like there were more of them available with third-row than not...

I originally wanted an SR5 with leather and was told that they do build them that way, but do not ship them to the northeast. Are you saying I should be able to get an SR5 with leather shipped to the Northeast? If this is the case, I need to have a discussion with my dealership; though I am not sure I want to wait any longer.

Thanks to Snooperstyle... I m now working with the dealer in Charleston. The vehicle I really wanted was shipped out this am on a trade for a different color with another dealer. However, the dealer is working on another trade form another dealer. Hopefully it ll go through. I already got confirmation from my current dealer that my deposit will be given back without any problems.

Go to Toyota.com, and select the "build your own 4Runner" link with your zip code. Any combination you can put together on that website is what you can get from your dealer.

I was originally told by my preferred dealer that they could not get TE in Shoreline Blue Pearl, and later told by another dealer that they could not get one with KDSS and Nav. A dealer in Colorado told me the truth and I used that to force my local dealers to do the work needed to get me what I wanted.

Toyota is not being served well by the dealers who employ these kinds of tactics to sell you what they have and not what you want. I'll settle for Pepsi when I prefer Coke at a fast food joint because it's temporary and only costs me a dollar. I'm not going to settle when it's $40k and a long-term situation and the dealers need to catch up to the 21st century. You can configure a Mini Cooper online and send it to a dealer, where they will negotiate the price, take the deposit, and signal the factory to begin building your car as you designed it. It should be just that easy.

I originally got told 3 months for the one I wanted. I went to another dealership and they were able to phone around and find one and have it ship to me. I think the trick is finding a dealer who is willing and able to contact another dealer to make the trade. Some of the dealers are hated by others in the industry and as a result they won't work with them.

SeattleMike, thank you so much for this information. After verifying that I could indeed build the SR5 the way I want it after entering my zip, I called Toyota and explained what I had been told by the dealership (multiple dealerships by the way). Of course they have a process for answering these questions, so I have to wait 0-3 business days for someone to contact me and answer my simple question. Hopefully I hear back and get everything resolved before the dealer calls me to inform me my car is ready. The wife really wanted factory leather, but didn't want to spend the $ on a limited.

This brings us back to the original subject of this thread... how long will I have to wait now if they can build the 4R I want??? Very frustrating as I sold my Tacoma 2 months ago and have a family of 6 with 1 car.

Don't screw around with these dealers that won't find you what you want. I'm lucky that I have 3 Toyota dealers in my area. The dealer I used had no trouble finding me a 4Runner and then going and getting it. They located it for me on a Sa****ay, I picked it up on Tuesday.

I will be picking up my SR5 on Monday. I had aftermarket leather put in for 1600. THe installer does all the high end motorhomes and the leather is better than factory quality. I saved at least 2k going this route and I didn't have to wait to find one put together, and I financed it.
