I was thinking the best place for rear speakers in a first gen 4runner is to hang from the roll bar. So I'm wondering if anyone has used marine speakers to do this

I suppose you could do this but they are going to look goofy and probably take up more space than you actually think.

Hey tarhell, GYoter and crozhawk . . . you got me thinking. That's not always a bad thing. 
Maybe I'm thinking not so much of the bigger speakers but something more like a Minimus 7 size speaker. Something with either a mounting bracket. Or better yet, I don't want to mess up or cut into the roll bar wrap, so maybe I can rig up some way to keep them aimed in a fixed position using hose clamps and covered somehow. Hmmm. Must think.
Well, actually, I have to get my truck fixed. I have another post with the tale of engine-related stuff I need to put priority on.
Croz has me thinking about being a pioneer now. I like the idea, cause then if I can figure a way to hookup and unhook easily, to reposition while I'm camping or something, that could be cool.
Do you guys remember the ADS box speakers, or above deck speakers from the 80's? That kind of thing could be nice.

wow. that is actually the best idea i have heard in soooooooooooo long. it woulkd block view, but then again, if you went with a smaller speakers, and fabricated up your own mounts, i am sure it can be done. if you made them detachable, from down on the cross brace for street driving, and up on top and reversable for party mode. maybe fold down speakers like the ones on the new dodge calibers i think it as. wow, thanks for the idea man

Actually I like the idea because sonically, it makes more sense that having the speakers facing each other in the cargo/factory position, and if they are moved to the side panels in the rear seats, they play right into people if they're sitting right there.
Most of the time, it's just me in the truck, so having the music playing forward is perfect. Plus I plan to replace the 4" dash speakers which face downward a little.
If I figure out some plans and speaker types, I'll report back. Otherwise, I'll still check in case someone else has a good idea, or has done this and wants to share . . .

lol, live vicariously? i take it you have seen your prime, dont get me wrong, thats not a bad thing. seasoned to perfection. how old are you? im 16, and i know my dad still like some wheelin, but not much anymore. i recall you (mspa) saying you had to sell some for your instruments to pay for an engine swap (the one i gave some info on a supra 5MGE swap) and that got me thinking. i play guitar, but i can just easily rip one of the speakers out of my old practice amps, and just have on central speaker for party mode, have it swivel and tighten via a wing nut of sorts, and flip it up so that the speaker points down when driving to add view to the rear window for saftey reasons. but as soon as you hit that trail or party, yo can flip it down and maybe swivel it around to face the rear, drop the tailgate, and rock on. does anybody know what wiring aftermarket wiring harness wil work with a sony xplod CDX-CA750X? i just tore it out of my cousins car, and the jackass he bought it from hard-wiried it in. to avoid tearing it all up and marking each wire, just get a new harness. right?

Oh, i'm oooooooold. actually just 45, but some days I feel older. See, when I was your age, I spent all kinds of money on stereo systems. nowadays, my priorities are different. Enjoy while you can!
