Wallet Spare Key

Did anyone get this spare plastic key in a card thing from their dealer? I got it cut yesterday, and I am afraid to even try and see if it works. It looks like it has about one use before it strips and won't work anymore. I wonder if you can get just a door key made without the ignition chip in it that will easily fit in your wallet (i.e. not like the valet key that has a thick head on it). I don't want to depend on this thing if I get locked out! :eek:

My wife's Lexus came with a really nice metal one that has the chip in the card, so will even work as an ignition key, although it is a little thicker then the plastic POS Toyota gave me.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Yes. Got it done at a local key counter.
 
Mine was a piece of junk. Never worked! Stripped on the first try. I got a regular, thin, non-chip key to keep in my wallet. works great just to open the door.

Why are some people getting them and others not? Is it a regional thing?

Might be a dealer thing. I'll bet you could get one if you asked, but I wouldn't bother. It's not even worth your gas money.
 
I got one when I joined up with AAA recently...works well on the door and rear hatch. Haven't bothered to trie it in the ignition...

but what if you loose your keys and your wallet is locked inside your 4runner? Then what?

it won't work in the ignition because of the chip on the regular keys. you "may" be able to hold up the real key to the ignition and use the plastic key, but why bother...
 
I bought my 4R a couple months ago and didn't get one.

Will using this key in the door shut off the alarm system?
 
I didn't get this plastic key either. All I have is the standard two regular keys and one valet key. My mom's lexus came with a wallet key and there is a way you can start the car with it.

I just pulled out the key and here are the steps:
1. Insert key into ignition switch
2. Within 10 seconds, put card closer to ignition switch
3. After security indicator stops flashing, turn key to start position

Basically, this key came in a card that is bigger than carrying the valet key. In order to start the car with this spare key, you need the big card. Basically, if you lose your main key, your not going anywhere fast!

I think this is what I am going to do too. I haven't locked my keys in my car yet, but I am leaving for SC next week, and it'll be my luck that is when it will happen... ~500 miles from home.
 
I got the key 2005 SE ,new in Jan.,took a couple of months but I think its from Toyota not the lousy dealer in my area. Tha parts counter at the dealer cut it for free. They said you could get a real key (metal) for $5 but only works the door. I think it has a big head though. I haven't used the plastic key yet and don't want to try it for fear of desroying it. I have locked myself out onnce. thought I would tape the plastic key under the truck rather than carry in wallet.

The plastic key will only work the door too if you have the security system, so I think it's worth getting a metal one made at the hardware store which apprently others have done, and probably for cheaper than $5 too. :D
 
I just keep a regular metal spare in my wallet. They don't take up any more room than a card key.

I bought my truck a year ago and all I have is a regular cut ket. I never recieved a Chipped key form the dealer. At at the time I did not know there was such a thing for the 4Runner or I would have requested one. But, then again, have a 2000, so it may have been before they started putting chips in keys, maybe someone can clue me in.

And another thing :D, one thing I do really miss about my Ford Explorer was the key pad on the drivers door. I never had to worry about it if I locked my keys in, I could just punch the code in and voila! Also, if I was at the house and had to run out to the truck for a sec, I did not need to worry if I rememberd to take the keys with me. Why don't more car makers put the keypad on thier cars?
