Ward's Engine List - Toyota doesn't hit every year

I was wondering why Toyota's engines aren't represented every year on the Ward's 10 best engine list. In comparison, Nissan's V6 engine has been on the list every year, for the past ten years.

I did see that Toyota's UZ V8 family made it to the 20th Century list:

To quote Wikipedia:
The selection takes into account power and torque output, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels, technical relevance and basic comparative numbers. Each engine competes against all others.


It looks like a horsepower race. Caddy Northstar? 300 hp but they aren't worth $hit after 50k. Audi 1.8 got boosted to 225hp in the TT. Nissan VQ has proven itself over the years w/ power and relaibility. The past years have shown that Toyota has not put high hp in front of refinement and relaibility. (many 22-R owners can attest)

Yeah, but the 22-RE was one sweet engine. Ward's ten best is a fine list, but like anything else doesn't tell the full story. The 22-R engines were decent on the low end and ran out of steam, but mine towed things all over the place and was bullet proof. I got 240k out of mine before I sold it. The guy who bought it now uses it as a cabin-only truck. Ward's can't rate that, can they?

Sorry to be negative, but in all honesty.....once I saw Ford's 6.0L Powerstroke and the Renesis rotory motor that list lost all credibility.

IMO, many Toyota engines were carry overs until recently, MZ and UZ, not familiar with the 4-cyl. Also, Toyota didn't get into the HP race with other manufacturers and continued to try and stay green. Up until the release of the 2GR-FSE, Toyota finally stepped up and produced a high output engine. The new UZ series should make it as well, has many traits found in the GR series.

Toyota has produced some legendary engines, 22R, 2JZ-GTE, 5S-GTE, the V8 UZ family. So with or without making Ward's, IMO, Toyota knows what to do and what needs to be done.

Based on their criteria, I can see where those engines might make Ward's list. However, I think they were only on there 1 year. But again, their criteria doesn't address reliability.
