Warming engine up.

Ill let you in on a little secret leaving the truck idle in extreme cold sadly won't heat up to maximum level. AS one other has said its been below zero and even my truck idling all day the cold over whelms the heat enough you can see the temp drop rather then stay in the middle.

Get in the car turn the heat off and drive it should warm up no problem then blast the heat. I wish i was in your shoes being 2 minute from home i wouldn't even turn the heat on. Get in start it and drive off
 
So is everyone really saying that their vehicles, sitting outside not in a garage and exposed to windchills and temps well below freezing and their vehicles are warming up in less than 10 minutes just sitting? :crybaby:

My lexus LS V8 takes forever to get to temp as well.

operating temperature for the v6 is around 190*f of water temp. i let mine warm up to 100* before driving it, and usually that takes around 5-7 minutes in this weather, thats been below 20* the past few days. in the summertime thats about 1-2 minutes to 100*

Yeah, I got pretty lucky with this job, unfortunately it will only last maybe another 10 months.

But I love my heat. Being stuck outside all day, I use heat whenever it's available. Haha

No I'm not wanting it to heat up to maximum level. But I do know that fluids are a little more congealed when left out over night in the extreme temperatures. I am going off of the thought process that letting some of the fluids warm up a little before going WOT on to the interstate.
This is a lot more common in Subarus as you can hear the classic "piston slap" that goes away after warming up. So although not as audible on the 4runner, it is definitely better to let your vehicle get the fluids circulating and to a least above frozen temperature before driving the vehicle.

I don't recall anyone saying anything about WOT. Get in the truck and drive normal till it warms up. No point sitting there a few minutes to warm fluids otherwise the manufacture would state that

I apologize, but I guess for me since I live near the interstate and I like to merge at similar speed to vehicles on the interstate I would have to accelerate rapidly?

I never warm mine up like that. I start it, let it idle for about 15 to 30 seconds and then drive off. Junior Damato, the auto doctor, used to have a column in my local newspaper and he told how a car should be properly warmed up.

When we had the deep freeze last winter, it took my 4runner about 5 minutes of driving to start warming up. And that was at 5 degrees F.

So yeah your thermostat may be stuck.

Just a FYI - windchill doesn't make our trucks colder. Windchill refers how the wind feels on skin, not metal. If it's 10° with a 50mph wind the truck will only reach 10°.

I understand sorry, just lately those values have been killing me. But my main point was lately this past weekend our temperature has been 2 degrees all the way to -5. . .not including windchill.

Many of us have had the experience of sitting in a car at a stoplight with clear windows, only to have them fog up again when the car starts moving. More often than not, this is a result of snow that was on the hood being sucked through the car's heater system; but there is another factor involved as well, and that is wind chill.
If we were to take an engine block and install it on mounts in the middle of a field for the winter, it would make no difference in the temperature of that engine block if the wind blew or not. It would remain at the ambient temperature of the air surrounding it, whether or not the air was moving. However, if we were to start up that engine and let it warm up, there would be a great deal of difference in the block temperature depending on whether or not the wind was blowing.
Any object that creates its own internal heat will find that heat is removed from it faster if the air around it is moving. It is simply a matter of heat transfer--the "conveyor belt" of moving air (convection) will snatch the heat away much faster than if it were still.
So the answer to the question is yes. Wind chill does affect machines, but only if they are at a temperature above that of the surrounding air."

I hear ya!

That's a major reason we moved from Minnesota after 25 years to the Colorado!

Buddy did the same. Says totally different in Co compared to the midwest. yeah they get snow, but apparently not the crazy windchills we get here.

I don't get this that much because I have the windows open to clear that up quickly. I don't mind the cold, but mind you I do not do this when the wife is with me. I know better. :p

I just noticed you're in Iowa, not a big difference from the Twin Cities where I lived. Coldest I recall was -30 without the windchill. Damn, I don't miss that at all. A quick check just showed me Mpls - 21 feels like 12, Denver 47 feels like 42. I'll take it!

Hate is a strong word. . .I do envy you though? Enjoy the weather.
 
I don't recommend that you do this necessarily, but I have been known to left-foot-brake while giving a tiny bit of throttle when I'm sitting at a red light in the morning just to encourage the thing to warm up and start pumping heat. Obviously that helps to encourage a quicker warm-up.

Since when do you need WOT to merge onto a highway. Isn't that why they have the ramps for you to build up to speed and merge. :suspicious: Just saying you can get up to speed like a normal person.

WOT to me is twisting the throttle on my bike while on that ramp and being at over 140 by the time i need to merge. accelerating rapidly isn't WOT.
So the sake or argument you do as you pessary and the rest of the world will do the same. Until its documented by the manufacture that you should warm up your car prior to merging on a highway ill continue to to drive normal to where my rims barely break 2k. which you should know doing 80 barely tips the needle over 2k

FYI its been -20 here in Chicago with wind chill for the last few days, I do also live by the highway and have to use it to get to work. :bounce:

Well as we both know what the merging lane and on ramp is for, unfortunately as you well know being from Chicago a majority of the drivers don't understand that. The ramp is usually grid locked bumper to bumper maybe throw in a semi or two and to enter onto the roadway where they are moving along at 70 on the interstate, or the on ramp is empty but people are traveling at 80mph so yes to merge with traffic I do need to accelerate quicker than what the original design for the on ramp is. Also not all on ramps are created equal as we both know I do not want to be doing 70 on a clover leaf/round about on ramp?

In regards to bringing a motorcycle into this discussion well that is just plain apples to oranges?' But please wear a helmet when you ride/

As we discussed windchill has nothing to do with this.

I guess good luck out there and I'm glad every text book driving experience applies to your daily drive? I guess unfortunately I'm the outlier as human interaction of others which I have no control over usually mean that my real world driving is just that, real world and not everything goes according to text book? :clap2:
