Warning: Do not buy a brush guard

agree'd, i bent my lower brush guard bar so easily one time running through a muddy ridge. almost belly'd out and the bottom bar got pushed up and back

well 2 things here, first you right off the bad damaged your brush guard and didnt bother to fix it properly, and second you dont even have the correct brush guard on your rig. i have a brush guard on my runner and its been hit several times and i still have over an inch and a half of clearance between the guard and the fenders at the closest point. your brush guard was probably not even ment for a 3rd gen 4runner, it was probably for an earlier runner or truck or maybe a pathfinder or something. i have used my brush guard for a push bumper several time, pushing cars off to the side of the road, or to push start them(3/4ton 4x4 ford was the largest ive done so far). anyhow my brush guard has held up just fine, and ive only once had a problem with clearance issues and that wasnt a big deal. dont get me wrong here, im much more of a fan of the ARB or ODL bumpers ect. but brush guards have their place and purpose, and they work just fine

Mines meant for a 1999 limited 4runner. Just checked. Its just probably a cheaper model.

Also to clarify for all: I DID NOT DO THIS. This damage was already caused when I purchased the vehicle.

So let me get this right...

You start a thread slamming brush guards showing significant damage to your fender and minor damage to your bumper.
Then you later admit you knew it was causing damage to the fender but only took it off before it caused too much damage.
Then you admit the fender damage was caused by improper installment and the bumper damage is from an accident.
Then you go on to say you didn't cause the bumper damage, but you drove the thing into a ditch and hit so hard you had to bend one of the crossbars back...O.K., maybe you didn't cause that particular damage (I'm going to guess you did :wink2

You fail to recognize that without it during the "previous owner's accident" the whole bumper probably would have needed to be replaced and painted. I'd take the bumper damage over a replace & paint any day. You also fail to recognize that you definitely would have had damage to the bumper when you drove it into the ditch so hard you bent the bar on the brush guard.

I agree. It did save my bumper in the ditch. I am not to worried about the bumper damage because i am going to replace that with an armor bumper soon. The thing I am pissed about is the fender damage. The previous owner had neglected to get it fixed or installed correctly, so now I am stuck with a damaged fender. Bumper = my fault. Fender = previous owner. btw, when i said "I DID NOT DO THIS..." It was pointed towards the fender. The bumper was caused in the ditch.

so saturday i beat the living hell outta my brush guard, smashed it on several rock, a tree, and on the bank... and all i have to show for this is some slight scratches, and a bent lower bar(which i will just make a new one). never once did my brush guard come in contact with the body of my truck or the grill or anything else that it would cause damage to. just saying they do their intended job just fine as long as you have the correct one for your vehicle and it is installed properly









yes a nice good plate or tube bumper would be much better...

i took mines off when i bought my runner, I'm keeping it though, i'm planning to use it for a tube bumper build project next year.
i had similar damage like what you have

They are a worthless platform to start a tube bumper with.
A wreck with a brush guard will do much more damage to your rig than if you had the stock bumper alone on. Hell, I don't even know if they'll protect you from brush.

yeah how i see it. if your using a brush guard to protect your rig from the brush, your gonna have much worse problems with other stuff if your going through brush that thick

Hell, I don't even know if they'll protect you from brush.

It will protect you from the shopping carts at the mall, though.

oh it will be gone very soon! i got it for looks though anyway, and now its only half a brush guard

but yeah this thing is great for Utah drivers. Out here people park and drive with their eyes closed so i'm sure its saved my bumper a few times from those morons that cant park their cars.

Brush Guard for 3rd Gen (1997) 4R with bumper that needs to be removed

Is it possible to take off the bumper of a 3rd Gen, and adhere the Brush Guard as a grill protector, like I've seen on recent models? Due to an accident, and finances, I'd rather get the guard than replace the chrome bumper if possible.

A heavy duty aftermarket steel bumper that sticks out farther than the feeble 1-2" of the stock bumper would provide some increased protection for the grill.
