Warranty Question...

Hope this exact question hasn't been answered, but I didn't see it in a search, so here goes!

I've got a 2005 Limited with the V6 and 2 wheel drive and have very low milage. I noticed in the warranty manual that Toyota doesn't require the dealership to preform the suggested maintenance, nor receipts for same. In regard to this, I haven't been back to the dealer for any service as I have my oil changed every 6 months, as I don't reach the suggested milage, and keep receipts.

My main question is about the 15,000 mile 'suggestions' in the Maintenance Guide. I can 'live' with all the suggested or required, however you look at it, things to preform at 15,000 or 18 months (whichever comes first)...I won't have that many miles when I reach 18 months so will I be voiding the rights to my warranty if I don't have someone Re-torque the propeller shaft bolt? (I have no idea even what that is) Everything else required I can take care of. I just don't want to take a chance on violating my warranty by not having the propeller shaft bolt re-torqued as I can guess it will not really need it with very low milage, or could I be wrong?

Might as well include the necessary suggestions for the 30,000 mile/3 years, also in this post, looking ahead...how about the requirement to change the spark plugs? Necessary to do if only about 12,000 to 15,000 miles? Also the re-torquing issue again if less than 15,000 miles in 3 years??

The bolts on the drive-shaft are the U-bolts that secure the end caps on the U-joints on the drive shaft. Just torque to spec. I have checked mine and they did not need any tightening.

Change spark plugs at 30K miles.

Are you saying that I *should* have the plugs changed at 30K miles, but forget the recommended end caps torque and I'll be Ok and within my warranty specs? Also, the plug change is recommended by the manual at 30,000 miles or 3 years. In other words, you say just wait until 30K even if I pass the 3 years that the warranty suggestions imply?

Check the U-bolts/nuts on the drive shaft for the right torque and while your there you could grease the U-joints and drive shaft. If you do a search for grease there is all the info you will need. You may even what to change the gear oil in the diffs and transfer case, it's as easy as changing the motor oil (check the search for gear oil or read through the Maintenance section). Change the plugs at 30K miles, if you're going to keep the vehicle you may want to invest in a set of iridium spark plugs (will last 100K miles).

But I don't have a transfer case...I'm 2 wheel drive. I also think you may be missing the point of my post.

I just don't want to take a chance and blow the warranty, and I don't want to throw money away having un-needed work done because of no wear, due to my low milage.

I think I understand what you are saying. When it comes to the suggested Toyota maintenance intervals does one follow the mileage recommendation or a time recommendation. In other words do you have the 15K maintenance done at 15K or if your mileage is less than 15K, at 12 months. Good Question.

My 4Runner is now almost 14 months old but only has 9,300 miles. Next week it is going in for it's 10K Maintenance (Bascially an oil change and check a few things). Should be interesting to see if the service people try to sell me the 15K service based on time (ie 14 months) or the 10k service based on miles.

I may just contact Toyota to get their feedback on this question you might want to do the same.

First you would have to experience a failure due to your failure to perform said maintenance, in a timely manner and the stealer would have to prove it. Both are VERY unlikely to happen, I would say almost impossible.
