Mounting a Nexus 7
Here I mount a Nexus 7 and configure it for "Dashboard" use.
First I welded up some scrap steel strapping I had laying around after doing a little measuring.
The Nexus is held on the mount by Velcro. Initially I was planning on a landscape orientation.
I'm not sure if this will be my final mount or placement, so I am using some "Servo Tape" to attach
the mount to the interior plastic. The cup holder is still usable as long as you don't have a big gulp
in there. And just a little reaching for the transfer case knob.
Eventually it looked like I would have to go vertical. The sideways orientation was a little too wide
and could be hit by a persons knee of they flopped it over. Worse, the charge jack on the bottom
would be sticking out the side and one careless knee or foot bash would pretty much destroy the tablet.
It will sit about 3/4 of an inch lower when I get a right angle charging cable from amazon.
The software running there is Torque with a simple theme on it. Torque can be set up so that when
power is lost to the charge jack (When you turn the car off), it will go to sleep and let the tablet time
out and go into low power mode. Then when you turn the car back on, the tablet wakes up and can
go right back into torque.
Inclinometer Free. Nice, free, can be mounted at any angle then calibrated with a button push.
(This is how it will sit when I get the new charge cable)
Orux maps in offline mapping mode. These maps have MUCH better offroad trail markings than
the stock nav unit. Best of all, you can load KMZ files you create on Google earth or other desktop
software so that when you are in the field you can make sure you are on track!
Now this is actually a MUCH better mounting place for it. Looks like it was almost built in that way.
Pluses:
* Can use the built in camera as a dash cam.
* Much more out of the way than down below.
* Looks more built in.
* Far less of a head turn to glance at it while driving.
Seems perfect right? Well...
Minuses:
* Mounting it there without doing permanent damage to the upper dash seems unlikely.
* A lot more sun glare.
* Can't see with polarized sunglasses in that orientation (Screen is black).
* Talk about a magnet for getting broken into. It just could not be any more out there in the open.
Making a mechanism that could lower and raise it from the dash when you turn the car on and off
would eliminate that worry. If it was possible...
Edit:
This is how I monitor trans temps using custom PIDs in the Torque app. This information is amazingly hard to find so the more places it's repeated the better
There are readings for "In" (Pan) and "Out" (Converter).
"In" is only useful for checking cooling solutions and comparing the temp drop to out.
"Out" is the one temp I monitor continuously. It is representative of the hottest the oil gets when running through the system. And since oil breakdown is caused by temp, monitoring the hottest it gets is important.
