To just see the difference in a sport and Limited

A sport came out to about $39,000 but I could not add
the side curtain air bags with/o removing the leather seats
and dimming mirror

Since these would be a definite yes. Looks like I would
have had no choice but go with a Limited anyway

Is this the way it is or just the site

Leather was not an option for Sports. The mirror and air bags could be had on a Sport though. Maybe just because the leather was requested on a Sport it messed it up.

That sounds a little weird. On a Sport, leather seats are a port installed option so that should not have anything to do with the side curtain airbags. The airbags are a factory installed option. The mirror can be installed by the factory or aftermarket. These things should have nothing to do with each other. My Limited has leather seats, mirror, and side curtain airbags installed with no problems so I don't see why it can't be done on a Sport. Also, $39,000 seems very high for a sport. They should be around $35,000 for a V8 4X4 Sport nicely loaded.

Everything on buyatoyota.com depends on zipcode. In Central Atlantic, side bags are only available on the Limited. No leather either.

But you can special order.

Guess that is what a person would have to do. Order all the factory options than pay to have the port options installed.

What really runs the price up is NAV system. This was why I
went with the Lexus. NAV was on just about all of them.
When ask the Salesman about ordering one, he told me
that they could try but no promise Toyota would build one
totally equipped and ? when delivery would be made. My 05
Limited runner does not have Nav, so when decided wanted the
feature, just couldnt find one. Yes there were some with
Nav but lacked other features wanted. Even the toyota
saleman said if going to equip one like that should go Lexus.
Worked out just fine, have both.

I think the problem with leather in the sport is like you said it is a port installed option.

If you get the side air bags, one of the bags is in the seat back and if some dufus installed the leather wrong Toyota does not want the liability if the bag does not inflate correctly.

I could be wrong though.

I have never even though of that. It makes a lot of sense because the airbag is on the side of the seat by the door and there is an "SRS Airbag" label stitched to the seat.

I had an electrical problem with the driver-side side-airbag on my Sport. The dealer had to replace the entire seat assembly, as the airbag is integrated enough into the seat that Toyota apparently does not allow it to be serviced by itself.

That being stated, I could've sworn that there was a company selling an aftermarket leather kit for side-airbag equipped 4Runners. Maybe someone else with a better memory can recall the company.

There was a thread on this before. That is where I found a company that has leather for the air bag equipped seats.

They made special notice about the air bags and where a special opening must be located just over the air bag.

The port installed leather is only the seat cover. That was in the thread also.

I don't think that Toyota wants the liability of having anyone messing with safety equipment after it leaves the factory.

Slightly different -- the Limited has a power seat and, maybe more importantly, the Limited is available in Stone or Taupe. The Sport has Dark Charcoal cloth and seat trim (i.e. the plastic trim around the base).

But since you'd be replacing the entire seat assembly anyway, I guess it would be OK since the trim would also change (as part of the assembly).

The problem probably is the cost: I think the entire seat assembly with airbag is about $2K per seat for a cloth Sport seat. Not sure what the Limited leather seat costs, but probably more than that.
