Wassup with New Windshield!?

I had my windshield replaced yesterday with a factory one, started driving in the rain, and there's no beading! With the old windshield I rarely had to use wipers, as water just beaded & scooted off while driving.

I thought the factory replacement was supposed to have this coating! What gives!?

Not sure if this is the same for Toyota, but when I received my BMW they did the Rain-X, hydrophobic treatment as part of the prep at the port. I am guessing it was done there because if you applied it before the cosmoline protection coating before shipping you would probably lose some of it when they stipped it off.

How are you sure you got a Toyota windshield?

If you're sure it is a Toyota OEM windshield then I don't know what to say, maybe you need to clean/strip it real good first.

Yes, they picked it up from Toyota, and it has "Toyota" imprinted on it - I think that makes it factory!

i think it wears off cause i noticed it when car was new that the water beads off, after 2 years it dosnet anymore ... had to whip out the rainx

Yes, they picked it up from Toyota, and it has "Toyota" imprinted on it - I think that makes it factory!

Hey, I had to ask. You never know when someone will take it on word from the installer.

I would contact the dealer and/or Toyota, maybe they stopped producing the windshield like that. The only place I ever saw that feature mentioned was in a promotional publication before the introduction of the 2003 4Runner. Or, maybe their production windsheilds are different than the replacement windshields. Or, like I said previously, maybe there is something on the windshied that needs to be stripped off like dirt or a coating.

My guess is that there is a place here in the US that produces these windshields and they differ from the factory that produces them in Japan. They probably just brand them Toyota but are not JDM. Just my guess though

When I had the windshield replaced in my 4Runner I specified a Toyota windshield as well.
The Toyota windshield (yes, I verified it was actually Toyota) that was installed did/does not bead water either.

I agree with another poster here that suspects that the replacement Toyota windshields are made in the USA and do not have the coating that beads the water.

It had a sticker on it that said" MADE IN JAPAN. Not to be removed except by vehicle owner."

I am calling the Toyota dealership that sold the glass to the installer tomorrow, as the installer said it wasn't their issue.

No. When they check with the VIN, they specify this glass. The installer said other things have to be modified for the ticker glass to fit.

Just buy some Rain X. Be thankful you don't have this shiner still on your windshield.

Just talked to the local dealer where the new windshield came from. They didn't know anything about the rain repellent, but are checking with regional.

It may turn out this is something they do at the port - might just have to get me some Rain-X . . .

Hey Terry,

I got my windshield replaced with Toyota glass too and near the toyota stamp, Lamipane is stamped below it. I think the original glass is Temperlite.

Anyways, I noticed that the water repelling function wasn't as good as my original.

I forgot to mention in my earlier posting that even though my replacement windshield does not repell water,
the rear window and the door windows still do. Even though that glass is over 2 years and 3 months old.

The dealer called me back. She said she had talked to 2 people in Toyota's regional parts department, and no one has ever even heard of a rain repellent!

She suggest buying a bottle of Rain-X.

So even Toyota, being the current epitome of the learning, lean & well ran organization sometimes doesn't seem to know the simple things!

So has anybody tried "Rain Block" by VSP? (I got some because it was cheaper than Rain-X.)

Yeah, at least the last couple days! Otherwise I probably wouldn't have noticed it for a while.
