Watch DVDs on the Nav Screen?

The only thing I know of that allows video playback is NavTool. However, even though they claim that it's plug and play, I believe to allow video playback there is wire modification needed, and that may void your warranty.
 
In genreal this is an easy fix... just would need to find out which wire to ground... Your local car audio store could probably do this for you at under $100 or so

I know you can ground the parking brake wire on most aftermarket navigation systems. That will enable full control of the navigation system and also allow you to play movies while driving (for passengers, of course).

I didn't know that the factory navigation system in the 5th gen played DVD movies at all.
 
It has NOTHING to do with grounding the parking brake!
The software in the nav,or firmware as it's called in a stereo HU like the JBL only reads data from the Nav DVD disc and doesn't have an MPEG Decoder for movies/video .As far as I know the firmware can't be updated/upgraded.They do this most likely for liability reasons and to protect us from ourselves............again.

You can watch DVD movies on the JBL nav if you hack into the camera video in lines with a external DVD player that can decode the DVD video.I don't think there is a way to get audio in to the nav so you'll have to have external speakers from the external DVD.

I was thinking the same thing. The only drawback to this solution is you'd also have to hack that reverse sensing stuff as well because the screen only displays the cameras video input when in reverse. You'd also have to have some sort of splitters as well so you could toggle between camera and the dvd player (external). In theory you could do all this, but it would be more practical to just get a travel dvd player/tv combo or replace the head unit with one that reads dvds. (in my personal opinion)
 
That's too bad about the inability to play movies on the factory navi. Plenty of OEM systems allow DVD playback, so why can't Toyota? Even my uncle's new Jeep Grand Cherokee can play movies on his navigation screen, but the screen does go blank when he starts driving.
