watches...

Just thinking out loud here...so, you would spend $995 for above watch.

BUT, wouldn't it be better to wear one of your mechanical Omegas (Speedmaster!) + a Jawbone activity tracker on the other wrist? You then enjoy the mechanical aspect of Omega and still have a very discrete activity tracker at the same time.

I think that this FC smart-watch movement will fail...badly IMHO.

I've had 2 Jawbones and they both stopped working after +-40 days. Jawbone CS couldn't figure it out. I suspect the electronics inside doesn't react well with my magnetic personality.

I'm not sure how other makes would fair. I'm not really interested in wearing two devices anymore anyway. I've worn my PO exclusively for over a year. I mix it up with a variety of straps.
I chose the Ti PO over the Sub 116610LV. Personally I think it's a superior piece, despite some people's complaints about the thickness.

Automatics are much less susceptible to cold extremes. Digital watches tend to be unreadable at 20 below.

Digital "G-shock" watches are great at absorbing impacts/blasts whereas automatics aren't.

Quartz analog are somewhere in-between those two in durability and temperature resistance.

I for the life of me don't understand what's the point of a small cell phone accessory on your wrist that does some of the things your cell phone does, and what's so inconvenient that taking your cell phone out of your pocket is such a chore that people are willing to shell out hundreds of dollars to avoid doing it.

Either way, automatics are going away because of the Swiss currency skyrocketing in comparison to the dollar, and a 2 grand Rolex now costs 7-8 grand, and used watches are selling for what new watches were selling for a decade ago. I bet if they slashed prices and made them more in line with what these things should cost, more people would go back to wearing them.

With that said, I've rattled my Submariner badly twice with muzzle brakes and aren't going to pay to have it recalibrated again.

Quoting wikipedia just shows how little you know on the subject.

Since you asked for a different source, this is a wonderful read: Father Time: The Quartz Crisis viewed from my Father's Constellation ? Timepiece Chronicle

A few quotes from it makes sense today:

"Responding to the Japanese, a collection of twenty Swiss manufactures collaborated to create a Swiss made electric movement which would eventually would be known as the Beta-21 movement.

However the Swiss had been far too slow to react to the changing technology as the Beta-21 was really over designed, over engineered and had taken too long to get to the market as soon cheap and reliable quartz movements were being produced by Seiko....

By this time though, the difference in quality between a Swiss/Japanese quartz couldn't compensate for the difference in price and soon production of mechanical watches diminished from 40 million in 1973 to 3 million ten years later."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
As a watch enthusiast, it will be very interesting to see if history repeats itself. So far, the response from Swiss is almost identical to quartz movement in the early 1970s.

Something to note...in all this, Rolex has remained silent to the smartwatch movement. IMHO, Rolex is 100% correct. Keep doing what it does best and people will come.

I`d better be drunk than arrogant and condescending such as you are.

my watch collection is none if your business. Quoting wikipedia just shows how little you know on the subject.

Vic, honestly, what did you expect from Thai? That Mary is a known colossal prick and proves it daily. When you enter any thread with him do so only to goad for sport and watch him take bait and run, run, run!!!! Other than that, he's not worth piss. Have fun!!

I thought that this thread is about watches? :der: I understand that you're still butt hurt from my logical relevant comments earlier regarding your watch choices/purchases, but there is NO REASON to get personal.:hippie: This is a fine thread for you to post pics of watches that you do not own too, hikenbike.

You get arrogant and condescending. I get personal. We all have our little nuances that make us special. I like watches.

Let's be friends. No need to get offended when someone points out your illogical/poor choices. And certainly, you are old enough to remember a time when we all love each other in peace and harmony. :hippie: Holding a grudge like a little girl is hardly what your parents taught you, right?:thumb:

I am brushing away my arrogance...won't you do the same with your personal attacks? :)

But why? This has its place and is very instrumental to my mental wellness. For every time I'm in a project meeting and want to throw someone out a window and can't, I can only deal with it by knowing I have you. Friends are overrated....but in the spirit of common goodness I'll consider it reluctantly when I consult my supporting team of psychiatrists.

It`s OK, I don`t mind , this is just amusing, I worked for the industry probably long before half of the members here was born, yes I`m old fart. that happens to know a thing or two about mechanical watches. But hey, what would it be without I know it all Thai. Arrogance is amusing to witness but otherwise harmless.

Educate me about Omega then...they did just fine financially thru 1970-1980s?? That was what you said. You disagree with the article above?

So, you have an Omega PO and now seemingly offended when I wrote about Omega financial issues with the quartz revolution? Calling me arrogant blah blah for a post not even directed at you???

What is your source? Prove me and the above article wrong. Being a fanboy is one thing...getting offended over something that I wrote (which happens to be 100% true) is another. You have taken fanboyism to the next level! :D

But, I am sure that you will come back with some insult...oh well, ignorance is bliss with you.

For those who want activity tracking + sleep tracking in a classic styled watch from a well-known watch manufacturer, here is the first of its kind: HOROLOGICAL SMARTWATCH | Frederique Constant

Powered by MotionX software (called MMT Horological). It works on iPhone or Android via app. Basically, you're getting a classic watch with activity/sleep tracker. Maybe I missed it, but I do not see notification (text, email, twitter, etc.) as a feature. No digital screen. 2 years of battery life. Time & date (no seconds hand) automatically set to your phone. The "crown" is a button; again, cannot set time.

More info: MMT 'Horological Smartwatch' Platform Ties Switzerland To Silicon Valley | aBlogtowatch

Watch above costs $995.
