watches...

The problem with a lot of these watches is the cheap SS metal bracelet! Hollow links = squeaks and rattles. That was one thing I hate about Seikos (and other watches of the same price range). In addition, while Orient does make their own movement (bravo and a direct shot below the belt to many Swiss watch companies!!), their regulation leaves a lot to be desired! But, then again, I guess that is why the price is so competitive. A few of their movements lack certain features like hacking second hand and manual wind on the second link. No sapphire. Cheap bracelet on the first link with a weird end link size. It is quite incredible to see their "asking" MSRP price! :D

This is why I opted for the cheaper rubber model so I can go into a better bracelet later if I like.

But I can live with bezels and second hands being a hair or two off at that price.

not all orient movements non huckable and m force has sapphire so as star series. Check yoir facts before spreading misinformation.
For 105bucks you cant have hackable movement nor sapphire glass, msrp means nothing every orient can be bought direcyly from orient usa with 30%discount ir more.
For some.reaaon my android autocorrect stopped working, sorry for all mistakes.

Not sure why you seem offended...but you may want to read AGAIN what I wrote. Please see bold and underlined of my prior post. Please stop acting like a fool without reading carefully what I wrote. Thanks.

As for MSRP, I am fully aware of the steep discounts...see my smilie ( :D ) at the end of my sentence!

Actually, one of your Amazon links is around $550. At THAT price, I expect full features (solid end links, sapphire, hacking hand, etc.), esp from a relative small name (to average watch consumer). Do you not agree?

For me, why waste $105 on a cheap automatic watch? Just my opinion. That thing will scratch easily, rattles like crazy, runs 20 seconds slow per day, etc.. That is more trouble than I want to care about. On the other end, if I spend $1000+ on watch, then I expect a carefree experience...and if not (like with my Omega), then I dump it and curse it to hell. That is why I love my Seiko Kinetic Titanium and my Rolex thus far.

I`m not a mind reader so I don`t know what the heck smile in your post means nor bold or underlined text, sorry.
Offended? not really, just stated simple facts, btw $105 piece can be extremely accurate if you lucky or get it regulated. I regulated my M-force to +0.5 a day, then I keep it face down overnight and it dead on.
in time for it to get cleaned and services I`ll dump it on fleebay and move on.
Hollow link bracelet looks OK or can be upgraded later if desired.
Orient small name? it is in US, everywhere in the world it`s well known brand. Very nice solid links bracelett can be bought on ebay for $30 or so.
You right Orient revolver is not hackable nor have sapphire, but it has deeper water resistance(1000ft or 300m and build like a tank, comparable seiko cost 2000 and not even available in US, non sapphire no hack.
Orient is best mechanical watch value, period. BTW first link M- force has both, sapphire and hack. For you it`s a waste of good $105, for someone else it`s a window to a beautiful world of mechanical watches.
Sorry about your Omega, I love mine. but that probably last watch I spent such a big amount. Today planet ocean cost about 6500 and AD not discount them anymore. Prices on luxury watches goes up faster then oil.

Well, if you had read my previous post carefully, then you should CLEARLY see that I was very specific in what I wrote. I just did not think that I needed to point it out to you again. So, no, I did NOT spread any misinformation.

I am a lazy guy. I don't like to spend more money to regulate it nor do I want to spend additional effort to get it right. How long has your regulated watch kept +0.5/day?

Higher end movements are more resistant to change in rate over the long haul and are fully regulated at the factory to COSC specs. Things like a bridge for balance wheel, screws for regulation, coaxial, silicone parts, and Breguet overcoil, etc. make a difference in both function and price.

Not sure if you know this, but today's Omega Planet Ocean has the new Caliber 8500, not the 2500 in your watch. 8500 is in-house (like Orient) and has sophisticated parts including the fully developed coaxial movement. This is why it costs so much along with some other cosmetic changes. (Note, even with the 8500, my Omega Deville 8500 had issue with the date.)

i read forums on my android phone using tapatalk, maybe I misread your post, if so I apologies.
so far .5sec a day kept for almost two years. given I`m not wearing my autos every day, they stay on winder most of the time.
It takes me an hour to regulate a watch, no biggie, hi sensitivity microphone and special software is all what needed, special tools as well but that only cost me a grand of so and will last a lifetime. each regulation takes one hour or so, I`m no watchmaker just a hobby. I`d not touch coaxial movement( Id take an omega training for that first) but cheap orient and seikos movements just perfect training material.
No where in my post i said that cheap watches better then expensive but 100 dollars timepiece can be accurate. it depends on many factors.
You expressed your opinion that 105 dollars mechanical watch is a waste of money( for you). I respectfully disagree, not everyone has desire nor means to spend 3 or 30 in some cases month salary on timepiece. cheap mechanical watch is just what it is cheap watch, it brakes, thrown away and replaced with something else.
I buy my cheap watches on amazon, return policy is great and I can return it if something wrong out of the box.

I agree with everything you said. However, I rather spend ONCE (or twice) on a nice watch rather than spending the SAME amount on a bunch of lesser value/cheaper watches. Just my experience.

Cheap watch has it place, not for you, I got it.

The $105 watch - on the wrist at the beach, for hiking, biking, truck maintenance, pool maintenance, landscaping, skiing, rafting, hockey, etc., etc.

The others - on the wrist at work, parties, dinners out, and other mild daily use.

Roughly equal wrist time.

I truly enjoy wearing a watch now. Why would I want to put a good watch through list #1 when there are attractive beaters to be had that function very well at a great price?

Read the watch forums. There are many, many fans of these watches who can accept their minor shortcomings - and keeping accurate time is not one of them.

Listen.... a $2k dive watch has a common problem with screwing down the crown. Unacceptable. Big $$$$ does not get you reliability.

You like it and that what matters.

I happened to come across a guy who has a vintage Seiko 7c43 diver from the 80's that's in mint condition. Has 5 of them and they are nearly impossible to find and especially in that condition. $350. May pick it up as a "special" watch to keep for one of my sons.

Know anything about these?

Quartz, right? Those are nice watches with good reputation. But I would check to see if there are any battery corrosion since these watches are old and may have been there for many years without battery change.

Your Citizen could do job #1. It would do it far better. Why? It won't get scratched in the face...and thus, maintain readability forever. It will actually keep better time so that you don't have to adjust it everytime you use it. Since it is quartz vs. a cheap automatic, it can also withstand shock better, and thus keep better time over the long haul. And you know what? The Citizen is not that much more expensive than these cheap automatics! And since you really don't know what type of steel they used on these cheap watches, your Citizen will likely last longer without pitting. That is why I never criticized your Citizen purchase...it makes beautiful sense! (I use my Seiko Kinetic the same way...my beater.)

But, now, you're looking at a rugged Seiko Quartz. What are you going to do with your cheap $105 automatics?? Wouldn't the Seiko Quartz take over job #1 above?? But again, unlike quartz watches, your Citizen Eco Drive never needs a battery...no battery corrosion to worry about. This is why your Citizen is the perfect watch for everything you wrote above. Who says that your Citizen can't do job #1?

Now, for more fancy events, then I suggest that you get something nice. Citizen can do that too. None of the cheap automatics can do it as well. Why? With its poor regulation and the need to wind them, you will constantly be changing time everytime you pick it up. And sometimes, these automatics don't run after sitting for long periods of time...even Omega caliber 2500 have this issue sometimes!!

If you haven't realized it yet, automatics are horrible as beaters. That is a HUGE misconception by fanboys who think that automatics can be beaters! And this includes Rolex. I laugh my ass off every time some fanboy thinks that his Rolex is strong and is a "beater." :D

I am on several watch forums...not recently because I have gone away from buying watches. Timezone is another good one BTW.

Like Stanley, you have the same misconception. A Civic owner can say that same thing to a BMW 7 series owner. Why put up with electronic gremlins of an $80k car when you can buy a $15k Civic?!! That's unacceptable! Isn't that your argument?

Your Tag may have the screw issue. So what? You think that your Orient or Seiko 5 won't? Yes, they are "disposable." True. But, in the meantime, you have to deal with cheap bracelets, rattling, pitting, wrong time (thus, constant adjustment with a non-hacking movement), scratched face requiring polishing, etc.. Just like a Civic owner has to listen to his 4-speaker stereo all day while the BMW guy gets to listen to a 1000-speaker surround sound system that will blow his mind. Or the Civic owner has to wear headphones to get away from road noise. Pick your poison...but don't think that buying a cheap watch will be heavenly.

(I am not sure that you know what non-hacking movement is...but I hate it!! I am fairly anal and I hate that you cannot stop the second hand when adjusting time!)

$$$ buys luxury and comfort. Sometimes, in life, this is equally as important as reliability, right? And sometimes with proper research, you can buy luxury, comfort, and reliability all in one. I can tell you for sure that my Rolex will look a lot better when I give it to my kids in the distant future...and will hold a lot more value (both monetary and, possibly, emotional) to my kids.

Look, these watch forums are full of fanboys that will rationalize their purchase till the cows come home. FILTER THEM. Know what makes sense and what does not. You're new to the sport and I can understand what you're saying...I was like you a while back. Just be wise with your wallet. But, at the end of the day, it is YOUR wallet, not mine. Sorry for the killjoy.

Done. It is in rare stellar, mint condition thus the $350 price tag.

I get what you're saying and I too think the Citizen is easily up to the task but I like it too much to abuse it like that. Same for the Victorinox (which is a very expensive and fantastic looking watch for $400).

For the Orient, I actually want it to be used and abused and look every bit like it. It will make for great conversation. If it sucks so bad I don't want to wear it, then I'll off load it.

For me (a semi-watchlover), i think that your new Seiko Quartz Pepsi is the icebreaker! :) I am opposite to you...i would use Citizen as my beater. Victorinox...no idea why you bought it! :D The Seiko Pepsi is unique and rare...and a watchlover would really be interested. And the Pepsi color will attract conversation way more than any Orient.

Congrats on your new Seiko BTW! I like it...along with your Citizen purchase. :eyebrows:

Buying watches thinking that you can offload it for anything more than pennies is NOT a good idea! Other than maybe Rolex, there is not much value in anything else, esp if you go down to the cheap watches. For example, even on an Omega, expect to lose at least 50% on a recent purchase! (Personal experience) IF the planets align, you may find a watch enthusiast to sell it to...but usually, that enthusiast also knows the market and will not pay top dollar for it.

I didn't buy the Seiko and if I gave the impression that I did then that's my fault. I am considering it but not really for me but for one of my sons more so to have as a unique gift after his college graduation a couple of years from now or some similar life event. I think a vintage watch with some history that is in mint condition may make a nice impression for a young man. Sends the message that simplicity and quality matters and some things can withstand time, function well, and give great service for a long, long time when taken care of. Unlike many products today unfortunately.

When I mentioned offloading the Orient I would never expect any financial gain, but only a total $$ loss by giving it to some kid who can use it to figure out how watches work like when we dissected frogs in science class.

x2! Like i wrote above, i like it! Yeah, the price is pretty high, but if truly as minty as you say it is, then why not?! Seiko does have a pretty good aftersale support...and afforadable too! So, you can wear it now and then let Seiko replace the bezel etc. later to make it new again. It's Quartz, so, it ain't gonna wear on you like an automatic...and servicing should be very affordable. If i was your son, then i much prefer the Seiko over the Victorinox or any of the $105 automatics. Return your Victorinox and get this Seiko! History. Reputation. Uniqueness. Rare. Need i say more?:bluejump:

Here is a pic.......its mint.......but 27 years old......thoughts??........
