Why can't a movement DESIGNED (not made) in the 1950's (if that is true) be as or more accurate than a newer movement? Makes no sense. Damn, if anything, I might trust a design thats been around and proven for that long of a time MORE than others.

Many might think the hand winding is unique, uncommon these days, and ADDS to the coolness.

READ the Rolex caliber 2235 review above...read the last few paragraphs. That is from a watchmaker, not a forum fanboy. Modern chronometers are made to a stricter standard of accuracy and precision. The (good) old ones may last as do most quality modern movements with proper servicing. Beat speed makes a difference. Chronometer grade materials make a difference, such as what a hairspring is made of, how is it regulated, does it have a bridge for the balance (vs. half arm), what is the ratio of the gear teeth, and how effective is torque being transmitted, etc..

But, yeah, you should buy that hand-wound watch for $575! Make yourself feel cool. :bigok:
 
Power reserve is a non-issue...i never wind my Rolex. I do wear my Rolex every other day...and no issue.

BTW, hikenbike, this is why i did not think that your questionable Tag's crown issue to be a BIG problem. If you wear it regularly, then you won't need to touch the crown more than once every few months max (to re-adjust the time)...and that is only if you care about accuracy, which you have stated that you don't.

Look at my first post about the watch. Just mentioned that it was interesting and also attractive. Never saw that before. You read way more into it as if I'm going to buy it and made an assumption because the guy who happened to have good pics of it is also selling it.

You keep referring back to Rolex's and higher grade and more expensive materials and can only relate on that level. You make it sound like everyone who owns a watch like that is an idiot. It's a watch thread that I'd like to keep alive with some observations but will no more.

Everything that i have said/wrote here is backed by facts.

You are looking for a quality watch...and frankly, yeah, all those high-grade materials and designs do make a huge difference in timekeeping and quality of a watch. I thought that it was obvious by now. Watches that have Rolex calibers, Omega Coaxials, Grand Seiko autos, Chronometer-grade 2892, etc. are costly for a reason. If every mechanical is great, then you would see Seiko5 movements in $5000 Grand Seikos! You bring up some low-end old ass ETA movement in a $500 watch and claim that they are more accurate than modern autos. What "reviews" are you talking about? From fanboys who own the watch? Think about that. And when i list exhaustively all the reasons why a higher end modern movement is a better choice and a worthy investment (based on TRUE watchmakers' opinions from years of reading up on them), you claim that it does not make sense!!

A Wrangler can climb all over your 4runner while going in reverse. If all these don't make sense, then you know why we are all laughing at you.

If I'm going to an interview I'll wear one of my nicer ones...but for daily life the G-shock gets it done and never asks for any care, cleaning, or maintenance.

When did we talk about a watch just for outdoors? Frankly for outdoors, I rather just use some cheap disposable quartz watch. G-Shock is good (expensive though) but unfortunately relies on battery (for most models) and has a face/crystal that scratches easily! Nah, a $10 quartz watch is good enough for me to tell time.

Daily life? Sorry, I don't go off-roading everyday nor am I in construction business. My Rolex and Seiko Kinetic work just fine thank you all these years. Care? Cleaning? Maintenance? For a self-proclaimed "watch collector," you should appreciate the beauty of a mechanical movement, right?

4x4 forum? Simple and Rugged? Oh really...is that why you bought a LIMITED 4runner? What a hypocrite! Who are you trying to convince here? Us or yourself? :der: Geez. Simple and rugged...get a Wrangler (or even better Suzuki Samurai) next time! Nice. But an utter complete waste. Not nearly attainable for the vast majority of people. Who will appreciate it? Very, very few - basically insignificant. Most that own it probably won't. They bought the brand and figure $x.xx gets them X prestige and they go no deeper than that. Probably have no idea what's inside - could be mouse on a wheel in there.

Like the guy who speaks of the 3 cool new Honeywell TFE731-5BR-1C turbofan engines in his private jet. Secretly (or perhaps no so secretly) we hope he flys it into a mountain so perhaps one of his kin will buy another in his honor and keep the economic engine running.

Both to take into account the increased pressure on the driving wheels and pivots, and also the gear ratios in order to more efficiently wind up the >stronger mainspring. A perfect example of a poorly designed automatic system is the old Patek Philippe Cal. 310. The gear ratios were poorly chosen for the strength of the mainspring used. This not only resulted in poor winding efficiency, but also in the steel ratchet wheel deforming the teeth of the ratchet driving wheel within a short time.

The only reason that I say 'theoretically more wear' is because in all my years at the bench, I honestly don't see any difference in wear on the pivots from an old 18,000 BPH watch to the Zenith Cal. 400 chrono, which is the fastest beating mechanical movement currently in production. The one thing that seems to destroy pivots in short order, is moisture in the movement and then leaving it running for an extended period of time before its next service. Poor servicing (i.e. inadequate cleaning, which leaves dirt and dried out oils on the pivots) and careless lubrication is also responsible for worn out pivots.

Modern watches rely on specially shaped teeth (such as the ETA microgear toothing), correct shape and material of the mainspring, modern lubricants, careful lay-out of the drive train and the smooth rolling of the Glucydur teeth on the steel pinions. Variations in amplitude on my timing machine are consistently the least with the modern Rolex calibers and the chronometer grade ETA 2892 and its variants. With the Valjoux 7750 and JLC 889 being not too far behind.

A well designed and accurately set up escapement is a given. This, together with a modern Glucydur balance that has been dynamically poised by computer and used in conjunction with an excellent hairspring are just some of the 'secrets' of an accurate movement. And what I mean by 'excellent hairspring' is both it's shape and material. Rolex and ETA (in their chronometer versions) both use the highest quality Anachron for their hairsprings. Rolex having refined and perfected the Breguet hairspring, and ETA having refined and perfected the flat hairspring with dog-ear bend to achieve virtually identical results.

The fit and finish of important parts -- escapement, balance wheel and hairspring etc -- is exemplary. While the decoration of the basic plates is really quite crude where visible, and virtually non-existent when it's out of sight. This might bother some people, but Rolex obviously spare no expense concentrating on those parts that affect precision and reliability while just giving a basic nod to bare-bones decoration of their movements.

I know that some people might attribute this movement's extraordinary precision to its Breguet hairspring, but I'm not one of them. Putting this movement on a timing machine shows its very smooth and exceptionally stable transmission of power from the barrel to the escapement, and putting it through its paces in the various positions shows its absolutely astonishing isochronism. This is the same type of performance that I see in the better adjusted Omega watches fitted out with their Daniels escapements -- and the latter do not have Breguet hairsprings.

All in all, I'm very impressed with Rolex's new movement. I really take my hat off to them for not sitting on their laurels, because there really was no pressing need for them to update their already accurate and reliable Cal. 2135. While other movements do match it, both in terms of precision and reliability, none do it with the volume and consistency of Rolex. A tribute not only to both their movement designers and precision engineering, but also to their amazing quality control."

I cannot afford Sky Dweller...but you know what? That's OK. I can still appreciate it for its innovation and design. And if i see some rich guy with it, then that's even better! That means that i saw one in real life instead of in pictures! The rich are that way because they did something in their life to get them there...all the more power to them! I wish one day that i can be rich too. Maybe one day i can win the lotto and get me a Sky Dweller and Lexus LF-A. :)

This is an excellent article that details why TAG (and others) are looking elsewhere (internally and externally) for movements and parts. Even Rolex had to develop its own hairspring because ETA (thus SWATCH) was the main producer of hairspring for just about everyone, including Rolex. My Rolex Turn-o-Graph's 3135 caliber does indeed have a SWATCH-supplied hairspring...the lone part that is not made by Rolex exclusively i believe until recently.

This is very fascinating...and hopefully will lead to more innovation because watch companies are now forced to find unique ways around this embargo by SWATCH. It will be interesting to see who innovates and survives...and who folds in the next 4-6 years.

Actually, you miss the point completely (again). Yes, this Sky Dweller is expensive. BUT, this Rolex caliber 9001 will likely be the base or a sign of the next generation Rolex calibers. For example, the next generation of the base Rolex caliber (Caliber 3235??) may feature some of 9001's innovations.

In other words, this caliber 9001 is to showcase Rolex innovations and designs. From there, these innovations will flow downhill to the lesser models. Why do you think almost every watch company on earth has their own version of tourbillon that usually costs north of $50,000?? This has also been the case with some of Grand Seiko movement features flowing down to Seiko 5 movements.

And BTW, the mechanical movement is FAR from being "perfect." The fact that you think so clearly shows your ignorance on the matter...and yet you assume others are like you??? Odd.

There is nothing to get angry about...chill out! With your logic, every luxury watchmaker (including Seiko) should stop what they are doing...stop innovating, stop designing, stop thinking out of the box. Should car manufacturer do the same? Modern watches rely on specially shaped teeth (such as the ETA microgear toothing), correct shape and material of the mainspring, modern lubricants, careful lay-out of the drive train and the smooth rolling of the Glucydur teeth on the steel pinions. Variations in amplitude on my timing machine are consistently the least with the modern Rolex calibers and the chronometer grade ETA 2892 and its variants. With the Valjoux 7750 and JLC 889 being not too far behind.

A well designed and accurately set up escapement is a given. This, together with a modern Glucydur balance that has been dynamically poised by computer and used in conjunction with an excellent hairspring are just some of the 'secrets' of an accurate movement. And what I mean by 'excellent hairspring' is both it's shape and material. Rolex and ETA (in their chronometer versions) both use the highest quality Anachron for their hairsprings. Rolex having refined and perfected the Breguet hairspring, and ETA having refined and perfected the flat hairspring with dog-ear bend to achieve virtually identical results.

The fit and finish of important parts -- escapement, balance wheel and hairspring etc -- is exemplary. While the decoration of the basic plates is really quite crude where visible, and virtually non-existent when it's out of sight. This might bother some people, but Rolex obviously spare no expense concentrating on those parts that affect precision and reliability while just giving a basic nod to bare-bones decoration of their movements.

I know that some people might attribute this movement's extraordinary precision to its Breguet hairspring, but I'm not one of them. Putting this movement on a timing machine shows its very smooth and exceptionally stable transmission of power from the barrel to the escapement, and putting it through its paces in the various positions shows its absolutely astonishing isochronism. This is the same type of performance that I see in the better adjusted Omega watches fitted out with their Daniels escapements -- and the latter do not have Breguet hairsprings.

All in all, I'm very impressed with Rolex's new movement. I really take my hat off to them for not sitting on their laurels, because there really was no pressing need for them to update their already accurate and reliable Cal. 2135. While other movements do match it, both in terms of precision and reliability, none do it with the volume and consistency of Rolex. A tribute not only to both their movement designers and precision engineering, but also to their amazing quality control."

This guy's obviously a fraud who's probably never seen the inside of a watch. And you buy into it. Shame shame.
