Wow. what a read. Besides the... uh... discussion and debate (LOL), a very informative thread with many, many cool watches. I have become fascinated with watches in the past few years, and I have a nice collection going.

My everyday, go to watch is a Timex Expedition I got for Christmas last year. Prior to that, I had a Wal-Mart Armitron digital watch that was going on 4 years old. A trusty steed that was ready to be retired. The Timex is a good watch, and has stayed true to their motto "It takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'". This watch is nice, easy to read and I like that it also features the date. The quality resin band is comfortable, and I can wear this watch all day long and be perfectly okay. My only gripe is that it claims to be 50M water resistant, which per the owners manual, is acceptable for showering and swimming pools. I found this was not the case when I first took it into the swimming pool and the inside of the case fogged up. However, eventually the glass cleared up. It has been back in the water since and hasn't had an issue. The glass is scratched, the plastic case has some definite wear and tear, but the watch is still solid and operates just as good as the first day I got it.

Overall, a great watch for just under $50USD. This was the stepping stone into finer time pieces. I became more interested in quality watches after this one.


The first high quality watch I got was a Bulova Marine Star. This watch was a gift, and it is an amazing watch. It is flawless in operation, and a beautiful time piece. The face actually is holographic, and while it looks black 95% of the time, in the right lighting it can look red, green, purple etc. The band is comfortable, but the clasp isn't what I consider "traditional", and you have to use a bit of force to get it open. Overall, being my first time piece that is worth a damn, I love it. It needs cleaned (as you might see in the photo, my paws have made some smudges).

My third watch, I just picked out today. Also a gift, I won't see this one till christmas. I nearly bought a Citizen Eco-Drive until I saw this one. I got a great deal on this watch. It's a Seiko Flightmaster Chronograph. Being an aviation watch, it has many functions that I will learn about once I have the watch in hand. It is solar powered, and it's power cell can power the watch for 10 months. Why did I choose the Seiko over the Citizen Eco Drive? Well, two reasons. One, I got a GREAT deal on the Seiko. I got the Seiko for the price of an Invictus, and it is worth about 4 times as an Invictus. Secondly, to me the Seiko felt better on my wrist. The Citizen I was considering was about $120 more, and while it is a Citizen, I felt that Seiko has quality that meets or exceeds some Citizen watches. Not to say I won't own one someday, but on this day the Citizen was just out of my price range.

Anyways, thanks for sharing your watches. I have looked through this thread countless times as an enthusiast and as I shopped around. Hopefully this post isn't too boring. Just excited to see there are some watch lovers on here!

I would but I ended up buying an Oris Aquis and I'd really like to avoid buying any more watches. I have an SLR lens addiction to feed as well

I own an Invicta Pro Diver. It's stainless steel with a blue face. It's an automatic because my body chemistry seems to kill battery watches, so I have to wear an automatic.

I've got a Bulova automatic skeleton watch that my girl got me a few years ago. I love it. Definitely the most expensive watch I've ever owned, and it only goes on for special occasions. I'm not too big into watches, as I'm not typically a jewelry person altogether. I told her I was into skeleton watches and that is what I got.

I also have a Swatch skeleton automatic that I like a lot. I wear that out more often than the Bulova, but that's because its a Swatch. It's also highly inaccurate.

I've always had automatics or quartz, never digitals. I always felt like I look like a square with a digital watch on. That me personally though. I just can't pull them off.

As it was said previously, on page 6 i believe, its all about the movement. Everything else is just looks and advertising. Citizen, bulova, movado, luminox, etc. are just a quartz watch with a pretty face. I love watches for the mechanics and art that went in to the design. Quartz watches just dont interest me. Im a huge seiko fan for this reason. They are the only company in my price range that has an in house movement. They dont slap a fancy face on a quartz movement and try to sell it for 1000$.

That being said, i wear my G shock to work everyday. It has been thru the mud, muck, sand, and IED blast in Iraq and still works fine. Damn near every watch on everybodys arm in the desert is a gshock or sunto for that reason.

I do wish to someday own a Ball, Doxa, Panerai, and Oris watch also!

You are incorrect, Take a look at Orient watches, in house movement and looks great. I have one for 30 years now, still going strong. serviced once about 20 years ago.

You are incorrect about Seiko being the only company with in house movement. Invicta watches are stellar automatic watches. Amazon has automatic Invictas for less than $100 for their pro divers.

You are correct sir! I forgot about Orient. They are nice watches also. As for Invicta, I have owned one and it wasnt bad. But they are NOT making their own movements to my knowledge. They mostly use miyota movements.

Invicta use whatever they can skore cheaper sometimes its swiss made sw200 autos.not a bad eta clone.3307 comes to mind. Deeply discounted invictas is nor bad value. Quality is inconsistent though. Id steer away from it.
Some mechanical zodiacs fiscounted to 50% off represent good value as well.

I love this watch too, had mine for about a year. My wife bought it for my 40th last year. Great watch and damn accurate for a mechanical watch.

As far as case size I can go anywhere from 39mm - 41mm, maybe 42mm. I've been looking on Amazon at some Bulova and Seiko but nothing has really caught my eye. Any other sites/brands out there to look at? Not really looking for a leather band either, would rather stainless

edit: I'm not a big enough "watch guy" to rationalize spending any more than that when I'm only 22 with student loans and a 16 year old 4runner that suck up the majority of my expendable cash, maybe in a few years

Citizen? They actually make some nice watches for not too much. Also depends on what style you're looking for.

Seiko orange monster. Prob my favorite watch. I have a samurai and white stargate also. All pretty much in your price range and all automatics. The samurai will be tough to find tho.

Damn..... its ALL about style. If its not something you love and think is cool, you won't wear it. All kinds of colors, materials, qualities, shapes, and sizes. Dive watches. Pilot watches. Dress watches. On and on and on. You've got to try a bunch on and see whats for you. Stainless, titanium, brown leather, black leather, etc. I suggest you go to watchuseek.com for some good advise, great pics, and lots of info.

Bought my first watch in July. Its been alot of fun and 5 more watches ever since. I'm hooked.
