I’ve never seen this thread before!... I love watches... it’s one of my “other” interests. I’ll have to peruse through the entire thread over the next several days when I have free time. Still have not bit the bullet on a high-end piece (read anything over $2000 IMO).... but I’m at 7 current watches (just got rid of two)... I’m extremely practical when it comes to timepieces; what do you want out of the watch? At work, I’m hard on them, so I own four G Shocks that get the piss beat out of them daily. For casual, I have two metal bands (one SS and one all Black), and one black leather dress watch. Need to round out the collection with a brown leather dress watch. Have you guys ever seen these... Helgray ?

Handcrafted? Are you talking about TAG, Rolex, Omega?? You do realize that all of these are assembly line products, right? Hand-adjusted movement MAYBE. MAYBE. Oris? Longines? Even less hands touching them! In other words, these high end watches have as much "hand-craftedness" as my Apple Watch does on a Chinese assembly line!
(And no, Rolex watch does NOT take one year to make!! And yes, i still own Rolex watches.)Quality time pieces that lasts 15+ yrs without service?!! LOL. My two Rolex(es) need servicing at 3-5 year period. Omega? 3 yrs for me; actually, one of them needed servicing after 1 year! My father's and bro's Rolexes...same thing 3-5 yrs, they malfunction...needing $800 trip to Rolex service center.
Just for fun, my Apple Watch will probably not need servicing for several years...and IF it does, then it will be to exchange lithium battery for about $75.

Yeah, Rolex and Omega can be handed down...but that requires maintenance fees ($800 every 3-5 yrs and costs ever increasing) and lots of restoration costs. TAG? Hell no, those things (at least newer models) won't last 10 yrs! [MENTION=96581]hikenbike[/MENTION] did research on this and he can tell you!
Actually, my Apple Watch is quite useful. I do NOT have Twitter nor even Facebook! I use it daily to read AND respond to texts and emails. Silent alarm is awesome. Setting alarms is extremely useful. And it probably saves my iPhone battery because i do not use it as much. It tracks my fitness, reminds me to stand, and keep tracks of my heart rate. And as noted a few pages ago, it has SAVED a few lives!!
You think that Apple Watch will stop working in the near future? It is not a smartphone. Apple Watch functionality will last for many years to come with MINIMAL maintenance.
IF you really want no servicing, then i would get Citizen Eco-Drive or Seiko Kinetic.
G-Shock can go 10+ years...but with a regular glass display, it will look like crap esp if you're active with it.
Never heard of Helgray. BUT, like i told Hikenbike at the beginning of this thread, i would save up your money and get ONE (or two) holy grail watch.
ALWAYS sapphire crystal in all watches that you buy that you want to keep a while.

My watch is handmade 100% by the finest watchmaker in London using only the absolute best materials and so highly engineered that he went so far as to assure me it will NEVER EVER need servicing. An amazing watch indeed worth FAR more than whatever I paid. I'm a very very lucky man to have such a watch. It's one of a kind....and its all mine.

Yeah, tell that to my Rolex that gradually gains 20 seconds in ONE day by year 3.5...did fine for 3.4 years at +3 seconds/day. Tell that to my Omega where the date got stuck after 8 months...and then again after servicing. Tell that to my other Rolex that the date would not change at 4 years of ownership. My other Omega never settled with rate and then stop starting up even when you shake and spin the crown...at 3 years of age.
My Rolexes have the legendary calibers 3135 and 2235...both are well known for durability and reliability. My Omegas have calibers 2500C and 8500.
Maybe i have bad luck or i am just rough with watches (i don't think so).
Oh no, i fully want to wait till it breaks before i send it in. My current Rolex is 3 years and so far has been OK...but.... :tape:
I now wear my Apple Watch daily. I may be a geek with no style, but at least my money remains in my wallet!

You're right...i knew what the costs were and happily paid for it. I bought them because of the uniqueness of the mechanical heartbeat. But, don't go and tell me that these mechanicals will lasts for ages without or with minimal maintenance!! These are cash pits from day one.
For me, the practicality and usefulness of Apple Watch outweighs the uniqueness of my mechanical watches. BEFORE smartwatches, a quartz watch did not have enough to sway me away from mechanical watches because it did not add anything to my life that is different from a mechanical...at the same time, mechanicals had this unique heartbeat that added to my intrigue.
This is also why i chose the SS version with sapphire crystals (front and back). I do not plan to give up my Apple Watch anytime soon, even if newer versions come out. Hell, i still have my iPhone 5s from 2 years ago!

True X5 story.....about 4 yrs ago I'm test driving a 2 ur old pre owned and I'm on a highway onramp and it flat out died. Totally shutdown. All power lost. Truck was dead dead dead. No alerts alarms nothing. Thank God it happened while still on the ramp and not in a lane. Traffic backs up. People crawling by staring. Dealership sends rescue truck and even they couldn't get it started or moved. So theres me and the salesman (who was obviously mortified) standing there in the shoulder. Salesman couldn't have been more embarrassed. Then they call name the next day to offer me a huge discount on the POS and I couldn't have laughed harder.
During the time on the shoulder, my son goes by on his way to work and calls my cell 5 min later saying "hey dad, are you on the side of a road near a dead car?"
No X5's for me. But I will say it drove nice until it completely shit the bed. Ha ha ha.

Unlike what Thai suggests, I don't recommend jumping into a Grail.....largely because you don't know what your grail even is until you try some watches and learn what you like and sometimes learn the hard way what you don't like or after some time falls out of favor. Do what your heart and some common sense tells you to do.....and be prepared to lose a bit if you'll be flipping (which is fun IMO).

True... True. Much to no one's surprise, I'm currently sporting two Citizen Eco-Drives and one Casio Edifice Black Ed. All three have been ridiculously reliable and fairly accurate (the Edifice is atomic synced and also solar powered). It's hard to argue with that kind of practicality (and decent good looks). I haven't shopped for "Holy Grails" in a looooong time. Mostly because, as I've gotten older (and wiser), I realized, if I'm going to drop 10Kish on a timepiece, I want it to be very classic and timeless in appearance... So I can one day hand it down to my son. I don't want trendy, or cool. I want elegant, and sophisticated.... Ya know?
P.S. I still have a thing for several models by Jaeger-Lecoultre... Have no idea what my fascination with that watch maker is but I've always liked them...

Here's something to consider...JL charges around $1200 (or more) for complete service from what i hear. This makes Rolex service costs look like Walmart! Recommend servicing every 4-5 years i believe.
So, you think that Apple Watch owners show off? You think that this is different with owners of high end watches?
I see that you have no clue about watches dude...btw, if you run your watches for 20 years without servicing, your watch inside will be like super glue!! Why don't you run your 4runner without oil change...and then pass your 4runner onto your kids!

I used to like nice mechanical watches until I grew old enough where I couldn't see the dial without putting on readers. So, after I retired i didn't wear a watch at all for a full year then got a Garmin that gives me biometric measurements when paddling. You know, time, distance, cadence, heart rate etc. as an added old guy plus, it's big enough to see and has a back light. My late 20s sons don't wear watches, just use the cell phone clock. I quit using my straight razor and suspenders too.

I too have noticed the younger generations have moved to not wearing watches... So many just use their cell phone. I hate that trend; but obviously, I'm biased towards timepieces. What can you do tho... Change is inevitable.
