water pump on 04 runner

I am looking to replace the water pump on my 04 4runner v6 motor because it's leaking, am looking for info with someone who has done this job because I have some questions on the housing above the water pump, like how many gasket and O-ring is there and possible part numbers and is the studs tranferable.

I don't know any part numbers, but I strongly suggest a Toyota OEM WaterPump

Get the whole kit - this is for the V8 but there are similar kits - do it all, pump, pulleys, thermostat, seals, belt/s, etc. or you'll regret it!

The OP has the V6 his timing chain is fine, just a water pump replacement is normal on these engines.

but likewise if you purchase a waterpump kit from Amazon or Ebay it will come the gaskets needed.

Cool - what aha said - get the kit from eBay to save money but make sure it's OEM.

04 v6 water pump

Just did this job 2 months ago while I was replacing my rad. I have the same runner: 2004 V6.
Since I was replacing the rad I figured I would check the rest of the cooling syst while I was in there. Once I pulled the pulley for the water pump off I noticed the weep holes were leaking so time to replace the pump. (Couldn't see the weep holes until i pulled the pulley off)

I went with an aftermarket pump (bad decision?...perhaps, would like others opinions on this)...anywho...working great so far. Please chime in if better insight is out there.
Everything I needed for the water pump installation (gaskets etc) came with pump.

As far as the water inlet housing I reused the 'O' gasket on the main inlet pipe coming from the centre of the engine. This is the advice the dealership gave me as long as the o-ring looked in good shape; which it did. (160km on the runner-yup Canuk here)

replaced the auto belt tensioner as well; which I understand is a good idea to do with a new water pump (others may disagree, and so would I if one is trying to keep this job as low cost as possible. But poor belt tension can speed wear on its attached components and they are not that expensive.)

I also replaced the thermometer (which for the V6 comes with the housing and o-ring. the v8's thermometer and housing are separate units)

I put new upper and lower rad hoses on, were getting a little soft. Went online for these at Conicelli Partznet | Used dealership in ,. OEM without stealership prices.
Looked at after market hosed but none fit properly.

As far as all those little water inlet hoses i reused all of those except the one I tore taking it off. Could not find these little hoses anywhere else. Was forced to go to stealership. Cost me the same price as I paid for the whole rad hole which is 100 time larger...shocker.

Anyway was a straight forward process all and all with my good old Haynes malual.
I should note that I also went to the dealership for the super long life coolent as recommended by all the wisewrenchers here.

thanks guys, I did the water pump friday after thanksgiving it came with the stud and the 2 o-ring gasket i needed to complete the job, its less than 2 hour job.

I did the same thing about 2 months ago.. I would also add the fan clutch since you'll have the water pump out. I didn't do it initially on mine and ended up having to do it today. Also I'd do the radiator, hoses, and it wouldn't hurt to do the transmission cooler hard line under the radiator too.

I have to also change the power steering return hose and the front Differential breather hose as well they look pretty rusty any advice on these? Thanks.

I was looking at Sunsong 3401237 assembly for the power steering return lines.

Also what thermostat did you use? Did you use the Aisin one from RockAuto?

Did you change the tensioner when you changed out the water pump or did you just change the pulley of the tensioner. I learnt that the tensioner is situated behind the alternator and hard to reach without the radiator pulled out. I was going to change it as well but I don't want to pull out the alternator. I heard that it is advisable to change it out along with the water pump otherwise the alternator does squeal sometimes because of the load change. I am thinking of just changing the idler pulleys and the tensioner pulley with OEM and maybe the fan clutch. Thanks in advance!

Just going to put this in here.
This is for the 1GR-FE V6.

Dont cheap out on the water pump, like i did. Back in 2015.

Bought cheaper, not sure what it was but it was not the AISIN.
Had a paper gasket, that fell apart and glued itself to the engine.
Was a hour job just to get the block cleaned off.:redbrick:

This new AISIN WPT-802 has a plastic like gasket. Thought i snapped a pic but cant find it now.
Thinking back i dont rememder the OEM water pump gasket being so hard to clean off. Seemed like it just pealed off.

And parts used this time around.
Gates micro-v fan belt K070834
Gates radiator hoses 22844 and 22845

Toyota thermostat assy 16031-0P010
Denso radiator 221-3117 (new, looks like it was made in 2010)
Aisin water pump WPT-802 / comes with the 2 o-rings


...and if you need the 8 small bolts for some reason, like snapping a head off, only 80 in/lbs or 6.6 ft/lbs, need a torque wrench for sure.
The bolts are M6x25 1.00 pitch
