Water pump question.

I need to do a complete timing belt/water pump service since I've established that the 245,000 miles on it is also on the original timing belt. My question is how do I know whether the water pump has the outlet pipe or not. I plan on getting a kit from rockauto.com per my mechanics suggestion. Some kits say with outlet pipe some say w/o. How can I know the difference? Thanks.

Just get the Asin kit. Same as OEM parts, including the water pump. As for the nipple, just look on the drivers side of the water pump, there is either a small hose connecting to the wp or not, that's the nipple there talking about.

Ok thanks. I knew there was a way to tell. He strongly recommend the gates belt. Well, these "kits" have pretty decent parts most of which are supplying the oem manufacturers. The belts are like mitsuboshi NOT Mitsubishi. Pretty sure they're fine

Those kits use OEM parts (Toyota doesn't make them all - they buy from others, like Aisin water pumps, Mitsobushi belts, etc). Using OEM parts means everything will fit and work, not be one that 'also' works on a 3.4, and a few others as well. If your OEM timing belt lasted 245K miles, almost 3 times the recommended maintenance interval, that's a pretty good belt. I think you'll be fine with another OEM belt. :)

Gates belts are top quality yes, but so is the one in the Asin kit, and the Asin kit comes with basically a OEM water pump as well, hence the recommendation. I have used them dozens for times. Great kits

That's good to know. I was already going to buy a kit. He's doing the job for $300. I supply all parts/coolant/sealant etc. I don't have the special service tools.

while this is my first 4runner, it is not my first Toyota.

I have used the gates kit twice and will NOT use again. On one the waterpump went out in less than a year, another went two years.
I have since used the Asian kits for replacement of the gates kits, and no failures in the past 4 years since being put in

maybe the quality has gone up since I last used a gates kit (5 years) but I been burned enough not to use again

Gates kits are great minus the WP.

As for SST's, there really is non besides something to hold the crank pulley while you brake the bolt loose and torque it back down. $300 is a pretty good deal on your end though if you don't feel like dealing with it all.

I am capable, just wasn't sure of the tools I needed. What do you guys use to hold crank pulley still?

Or for a little more money you can get the one specifically for Toyotas.

Amazon.com: Buying Choices: Schley Products 64400 - Harmonic Damper Pulley Holding Tool - - Schley Products - 64400

That one is a better tool, but you might get more use out of the universal one.

Or, for a lot less money, get an old 2x4 and some 3/8" stove bolts and make one. Less than 20 minutes and maybe $10. (I had everything lying around, so zero in my case. Just remember, bolts on the diagonal, NOT the center line, and leave plenty of wood PAST the hole. Ignore these tips, and don't come crying to me when it breaks, 'cuz it will.

can you see the hose coming from the water pump without removing the timing cover?

Yes you can. Pretty sure they all have the nipple though, but i am not 100%. Every 3.4L 4Runner I have done has. A buddy once got a DNJ kit and had the nipple/no nipple option. I opened the box and we took the kit back. Pile of crap. I only see one part number for the Asin kit, and it has the nipple.

This shot will give you an idea where to look. See the hose coming out the side of the thermostat housing? You can still see it when all the covers are on.

Just out of curiosity, what's the hose going to? Mine has it, so the Aisin kit worked just fine. I assumed it was going to the heater core, but if that's what it is then all of them should have it.

Anyone know what the deal is with this?

The water pump hose goes to the oil cooler. It's visible behind the rear splash curtain in the left front wheel well.
