Water Pump

I think I've finally figured out where the leak in my cooling system is for my 6 cylinder, '93 4runner. I've had a few people look at it and they all seem to agree it's probably the water pump. I've never replaced anything like that in my car, but I've been told if I read up on it enough, I should be able to replace it myself. The part is only 30 bucks at O'Reilly's, so I'm not really worried about it being the wrong part. I'm going to try and fix it myself, but I need advice or links to any helpful articles, if possible. I've been reading up in the Chilton book, but a little more info would make the job easier. Thanks!

the water pump is driven by the timing belt, so plan to change that as well.

Agreed.

The same time you change your water pump - change the timing belt, thermostat, and any hoses that feel soft, or are cracked.

:juggle:

Along those same lines as what others suggested, it's not the water pump that you need to be prepared for, but rather being sure that you understand how to change the timing belt properly--a water pump just bolts on, but a timing belt needs precise alignment of gears, and making sure that the tensioner is working properly.

You might consider buying an Aisan timing belt/water pump kit(high quality, worth the $$ and less then the dealer). It might be worth replacing the t-stat, Tama seems to be the only Japan made unit with the after market sellers now. While your in there, it's worth checking the cam and crank seals. Check the fan clutch, if it is original, they can rob a lot of power and mpg when faulty. It is worth have a copy of the factory work shop manual set, if available. Best of luck with it.

Thanks guys. This is turning into a lot bigger project than I had originally planned. How do I change the timing belt? Do they come in specific sizes? Really not up to speed in this area.
What will I need to remove to get to the water pump? The Chilton book talks about the fan shroud? What the heck is that?

I am going to suggest that you have a mechanic or a very knowledgeable mechanically talented friend do this with/for you.

Its not as bad as you might think.
First remember that the 3vze is a non-interference engine.
Meaning that the valves will never strike the piston no matter how far off the timing might be.

(1)-Start by draining the coolant and removing the black plastic shroud around the cooling fan. Sometimes you haft to loosen it up and unbolt the cooling fan before you can remove either from the engine bay.
-Next remove the fan clutch witch is what the fan was bolted to.
-Now remove the upper and lower radiator hoses.
-Next remove the coolant neck (2)from the front of the engine and also the thermostat neck(3).
-Next Remove the fan clutch mount(4).
-Now remove the timing belt cover(5).
-Now you will need a harmonic balancer puller to remove the HB.(6)
-Remove the 3 10mm bolts on the plastic cover thats behind it. (7)
-Next remove your tensioner(8) (refer to your Chilton book for this part)
-Remove your timing belt.
-Spray some WD-40 or similar on the water pump bolts.(9)
-Remove the water pump.
After this point, you reinstall in reverse order. Again please use your Chilton book for timing and torque specks. PLEASE dont over tighten your water pump bolts. The pump housing will warp and will leak....a lot. In one of the pics I'll point out where it will normally leak if it is in fact warped. You will be better off just buying the brand new pump which should come with some sort of limited warranty.
Hope all of this mess helps.

Harmonic Balancer/Pulley

Just had mine freeze up and won't turn.

My question is why would you need to remove the harmonic balancer/pulley?

Can't you replace the pump w/o doing this......doesn't look like its in the way or anything

PS. God I hate engineering like this ......where they make it so freaking hard to replace a part that commonly fails..........

in order to get the belt off the crank pulley you need the harmonic balancer removed. most cars it keeps the timing cover from being removed.
