Mine does this. Toyota Tech I know very well told me it is common and not an issue, has to do with the type of seal and that high pressure water can get a few drops in. I notice this only when its cold out and the seal shrinks a little, during the summer I have zero leaks.

Very rare. Never had a leak in 40 years and never known anyone that had a leak. Maybe you shouldn’t have side windows. I’ve heard that an occasional side window seal can go bad and a leak can occur.

I like mine, so far. Knocking wood because no leaks or issues yet in my 2012 SR5.
Nothing like toolin' down the road on a nice day or night with the sunroof open. I've only been thru a car wash with it once when on a long road trip and it was tight. Otherwise I always wash it by hand myself. I'm totally happy with it. Until???? hopefully nothing happens with it and I enjoy it for the life of the vehicle. 8 trouble free years so far.

My 18' TRD Prem with NO sunroof was difficult to find. It took three different Toyota boats from Japan before one was available in my Region. My color rule was no Black, no Red. Any other color was ok.
To the OP, I had a Honda that most of the time was dry. Every once in awhile the sunroof would leak a few drops in the carwash. I only opened the sunroof once a year to verify it worked. Never parked under trees. Only bought the sunroof package to get the four wheel disc brakes. Otherwise it came with rear drum brakes.
Worse than sunroofs are moonroofs. Many moving parts (sunshade) that can rattle. Body flex can easily shatter the whole thing.
I think with a sunroof / moonroof / panoramic roof or convertible, whatever you have there are things you should be doing on occasion. Inspecting the rubber seals, cleaning them with alcohol and applying some kind of silicone spray - even tire shine to keep them new.
I've left mine open a number of times by mistake near freaking pine trees or other types and come back to realize that was a mistake because of the amount of debris now in the channels. That stuff should not be left in there, when arriving home it is promptly sucked out with the shop vac (buy some of the small interior cleaning tools). The other thing you can do with those is use the vac like a compressed air blower and let the drain tubes have it I guess but anyway - along with periodic maintenance like that during your monthly detail session or whatever - things should be smooth for many years.
And yeah - high pressure car washes vary, some of them are cranked crazy hard, I go to one with our car in the winter where it crosses the roof line back and forth for about 15 secs and the headliner is being pushed down. No freaking way I would take anything through there with a sunroof. :yuck:

Wow... that sounds bad... how is paint on your roof?
BTW: 2013 Trail, no issue with sunroof at all- I love it. Never had sunroof leaking on any vehicle I had in the past 30 years...

OK. I did spend most of my life in FL.Letting in the blazing hot sunshine was not a thing anyone would enjoy.
We call it a moonroof, for obvious reasons...though there's a couple months a year it's pleasant during the day her in NorCal.

That should have a qualifier. Idiots that do zero maintenance will have problems with anything they buy. Lazy is a word that comes to mind.
I have had many moon roofs, no leaks wait ... because I pay attention to it.

No joke - its just a little Hyundai so there isn't too much between the sheet metal and headliner. Its one of the new high pressure washes Esso is using around here, its like 6 nozzles that cross back and forth and when they hit the vehicle you feel it big time. I suppose those things don't calibrate pressure for different vehicles so I would presume that a tall vehicle like ours with a sunroof is easily compressed under those water jets. I can see the give in my sunroof when I'm putting pressure on it with my wash mitt for petes sake so yeah - I can see high pressure water jets being able to get through that seal for sure. I don't bother with those washes, and I hate the rotators for obvious reason. In the winter I'll go to a coin op and blast it myself then use the low pressure no spot rinse at the end, seems to do the job.

Did anyone have any luck finding a part number for an 04/gen 4 4runner sunroof seal/gasket? I had to replace my glass/frame and the seal on the replacement doesn't really seal very well.

Can’t help you with the part number but until you figured that out make sure your drainage works fine, as long it’s clean you should be good
The seal is just one component of the rain water proofing system of the moonroof!
